Mrs Coulter heads the Oblation Board, so she certainly has the power to shield Lyra form harm. However Lyra is certainly going to become further antagonistic towards Mrs Coulter when she discovers she's in charge of the General Oblation Board and what it does at Bolvanger. Thus at that stage, in desperation to keep Lyra compliant and dependant on her, Mrs Coulter might be tempted by the practices at the station.

I want to discuss the timeline after Bolvanger.
Ultimately we're aiming to get Lyra and Rodger to the hands of Lord Asriel, so that he can bridge to the other world in which Lyra meets Will.

To do that Lyra needs Lee Scorseby's balloon and the armoured bear, Iorek Byrnson.

I am less worried about Lyra not having met the Gyptians. They provide the distraction at Bolvanger which allows the kids to escape the Tatar regiment. But they don't need to meet Lyra since they were going North anyway.

I suggest that the airship Lyra and Mrs Coulter travel on has to stop at the town of Trollesund. Here maybe Lyra has a chance escape, meeting the baloonist and the bear before getting recaptured?

I like the idea for Bolvanger, its a good twist and adaption for the world. Though I'm wondering whether Coulter would have Lyra subjected to the harsher treatments, since they do seem to be forming a sort of twisted bond right now.

Firstly, I suggest maybe they eat out, Mrs Coulter might have arrangements for the ball to meet anyway, such as picking up flowers or a patisserie order.

I also suggest that at some point before the ball Mrs Coulter reveals to Lyra that they will be travelling to the North the following day, in order to keep her compliant and well behaved during the ball. She should show Lyra the tickets as proof or prohaps they even go to pick them up as an errand.

I'm not convinced that Lyra would associate Marisa Coulter as her 'Mummy' even at the point Lyra becomes aware that she is her mother. The fact being that Lyra has never known her parents during her upbringing or had a mother figure in her life. In fact throughout the books she has a distinct preference to attaching herself to masculine figures (Freudian?) However...

I think there is some scope to include this later when they reach the Station/Bolvanger. I think in addition to the intercession experiment on the children and their daemons, the General Oblation Board should also being hypotising\drugging\surgically making the children incontinent and regressive. The justification being something along the lines of experimenting to see if trying to keep the prepubescent children, infantile, even at the point of puberty, helps them to retain their innocence I.e. stop them from attracting Dust/Original Sin. A kind of fundamentalist vision of "Jesus loves the little children".

Through this process Lyra could be conditioned to call Mrs Coulter, Mummy.

Also the Station will give you an opportunity to play one or more of the regressed children. Whether that be Roger or an OC, I'll let you decide.
