Well The Mega Charazard is powerful, really his whole team is nothing social and I kinda thought Ash would have more Pokemon by the time he would fight his last one.
You know Diantha from the games? Not sure if you do but most agree her team isn't strong except her mega Gardivor which can be a bit difficult if taken lightly. Think of that for Alain's team.
There is a reason... Alain dresses like that thing XD.

And I didn't actually watch the XY series, I quit watching at diamond and pearl, but after hearing the hype, I watched the first episode of the fight, which ended with the rival throwing his Charizard out then got bored because of how weak they still both felt

Well to be honest some say most of his Pokemon are very weak, this is because his mega charizard is what's most powerful on his team. Remember he was used for a mega special and so he puts most of his attenation on his charizard. Think of it like red in origin where he only focuses on charizard and we see nothing of the others. He probably trained that Pokemon the most.
