That may be true, grandsword but also remember that the Congress members that are up for re-election cannot just ignore the people who had originally voted them into office wihout the risk of losing their future votes and ultimately their re-election. Also, the Congress members whose terms are already at the maximum allowed limit and are thus on their way out of office either way, would want to end their career on a "High note" by "Doing the right thing in the eyes of the people." as [recorded] "History does not forget". The only Congress members who would naturally oppose such legislation would be the ones who are in the beginning or the middle of their term in office and thus stand to lose the most financially. It's a "Mixed bag" of Congress members since they aren't all up for re-election or finish their office terms at the same time!

Ad I really don’t see politicians screwing themselves when they have a whole country to foot the bill for their stupidity.

The problem in this case is that the body effected would need to vote it in.

There are some articles that you can read which show that some petitions are successful while others are not, grandsword. See -> https://www.damemagazine.com/2013/11/18/does-changeorg-really-change-anything/ and -> https://pix11.com/2016/02/04/do-change-org-petitions-really-work/. You never know if a petition for change will actually work until you give it a try by adding your signature among that of many others and see what happens after it is sent out. However, if you and many others don't try (ie - There are not enough signatures to meet the minimum required amount of signatures which varies in each petition) then it is definite that no change with a given issue will occur! It's kind of like the state lottery - If you buy a ticket you may or may not win but if you don't buy a ticket at all then you definitely can't win in the lottery!

Some petitions are successful while others are not, grandsword. For any given controversy, it depends upon how much of an impact a petition placed before an authority for consideration, is perceived by the authority to have upon the situation. Just because a lot of people sign and present a petition to an authority doesn't always mean that the authority will bend to the will of the people. In the end, it's still a crapshoot. Though, if you care enough about an issue then you should at least try to effect change. Those that sign a petition must persist and keep up the pressure (e.g. By trying to recruit others to sign, by calling the authority if possible [ie - If the authority is the gov't] and/or by financially donating to the cause) until change occurs. Whenever you sign a petition, you provide your First name, Last name and email address. You will be emailed updates about what's happening in the given situation (e.g. - The petition is ongoing or has been sent and has either met its goal or has failed).

Hey all! Here's your chance to "Stick it" to the wasteful, rich, "Fat cats" in Congress who have caused the government to temporarily shutdown: Sign the Change.org petition to dock Congressional pay whenever the US government shuts down! -> https://www.change.org/p/dock-congressional-pay-when-government-shuts-down
