Howdy. Shocked we never spoke given we're both big X-Men fans.

Thought I'd toss you a hello and see how you were doing.

Hmm. So the surge protector light in your power strip flashed back on a few days ago? You could first unplug everything from your power strip and reset its circuit breaker. There should be either a rocker switch or a push-button switch in your power strip that you can momentarily flip to the "Off" position and then back to the "On" position to discharge any remaining charge that might be left over from when your power strip experienced the power overload caused by the electrical equipment used in the outside road work.

If you suspected that the electrical wires in your computer's PSU (Power Supply Unit) were faulty, you could have used the "Paper clip" method for testing it -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixcWCrYpw3Y. If it is a problem with your computer's PSU, you should replace it ASAP with another one (Another used one if not a new one) before a surge builds up inside of it and fries your computer's motherboard or any components attached to the motherboard (e.g. - Hard drive or RAM memory sticks. DVD writers and CD/DVD-ROM drives tend to be more resilient - A long time ago, I lost a 40GB HDD [I didn't make backups back then] and a 512MB stick of DDR memory when an old, cheap, generic brand 300Watt PSU that I once had developed a surge overnight while I was sleeping. When I woke up, I saw my HDD constantly spinning [The drive light was on constantly even though I didn't set my machine to do anything overnight] and garbled text on my monitor. When I tried to reboot, my computer failed to POST saying that there was no primary master hard drive installed and that the amount of RAM memory had changed. Luckily my mobo didn't suffer any damage. Nowadays, I only buy name brand, 80Plus Bronze certified PSUs [They're good enough for my purposes - No need to spend the extra $$$ for a 80Plus Platinum or even Titanium Certified PSU. I don't use my machine for BitCoin mining])! If it was the electrical wires behind your wall outlet then that would be a different matter! Did you try plugging in your computer into another outlet in a different wall?

BTW - I found these funny related pics (None of the pics are directed at you)!

There are a few things that you try since you don't know exactly what is wrong with your computer:

Update your Anti-virus application with the latest virus definitions and perform a full scan for viruses.

Download and install the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware -> https://www.malwarebytes.com/. After installing Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, perform a full scan (aka "Threat scan" - The application will automatically download the latest malware definitions as its first step in the process).

Let both applications quarantine any malicious programs that each may find (For the moment, do not restore any programs from quarantine, not even the ones that you trust). Afterwards, reboot and see if everything seems okay with your computer.

If no problems were found by both applications and everything appears okay then as an additional precaution against future viruses and malware, download and install the free version of VoodooShield (It offers real-time protection against viruses and malware from entering your computer by blocking and destroying them every time you go online. When you are offline, VoodooShield automatically turns itself off to save memory.) -> https://voodooshield.com/.

If no problems were found by both applications and there are still problems with your computer then your Windows registry might be corrupt. You can download and install the free version of CCleaner Registry Cleaner -> https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner. Run CCleaner, click on the "Registry" tab and then click on the "Scan for Issues" button. After CCleaner is done scanning, examine the list of found problems and fix any problems that you wish fixed with your Windows registry by clicking on the "Fix selected issues ..." button.

If you discover that some applications that you use no longer work properly or at all, it may be that those applications or programs used by those applications are infected and under quarantine by your Anti-Virus or Malwarebytes (In which case, you might want to uninstall the affected application(s), re-install them and then delete the infected files from quarantine).

You can check and repair your hard drive for problems using Windows ScanDisk (Run Windows Explorer, right click on the hard drive where Windows is installed, select "Properties", click on the "Tools" tab and in the "Error-Checking" group, click on "Check now ..." button. In the "Check Now" window, make sure that the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checkbox is checked and then click on the "Start" button).

If there are problems that ScanDisk cannot repair (Which could mean that your hard drive is starting to fail), you can either try to have those problems repaired using Spinrite (Commercial software) -> https://www.grc.com/sr/spinRite.htm or a freeware application called HDAT2 (I've used SpinRite and not HDAT2 but judging from HDAT2's website, it pretty much has the same functionality as SpinRite) -> https://www.hdat2.com/. Both applications require you to boot your machine on a CD-ROM drive or a USB thumb drive (SpinRite has FreeDOS built in while HDAT2 requires a DOS bootdisk image that can be created using a freeware utility called Rufus -> http://bootableusb.net/create-bootable-dos-usb-drive/).

You can also check your RAM memory sticks using the free version of MEMTest86 (Requires a DOS boot disk image [See above]) -> https://www.memtest86.com/index.html. Check each memory stick one at a time with only one stick inserted into your motherboard at any given time (This requires you to open up your computer's case - If you don't feel comfortable doing this then you can still check your memory sticks all together at once but you won't be able to do anything if they are found to be defective). I hope that each of your memory sticks finishes a single pass (That's all that's needed) of MEMTest86's set of memory tests (Otherwise, you'll have to replace any defective memory stick).

I hope that this all helps to keep your machine up and running~!

    I have a problem:

I just visited your profile today and noticed that your Date of Birth is posted as "January, 5".

With the VM that I posted on January 2nd, I had asked "When was your birthday?" but I made that post after clicking on the "View conversation" link in my profile, closed the browser tab with that page and then continued on with a PM that was in another browser tab. I did not directly visit your profile, otherwise I would have noticed that my VM question would have already been answered and should have been withdrawn in preparation for the event. Also, it's hard for me to notice these kind of details when I'm simultaneously dealing with multiple things IRL and surfing the Web while my head is up in my ass - I know, it's a shitty thing to do but sometimes I can't help but be curious and try to take an in-depth focus into some things while unintentionally letting other things "Slip through the cracks" (I guess there's a lesson to be learned there - Sometimes being too curious can get you into some deep shit)! I'm so sorry for "Dropping the ball" and not catching it back until now. Thanks for carrying on as though nothing bad happened. I hope that you can forgive me as I take my head out of my ass and wish you a:

    Belated Happy Birthday~!

If you still want to talk about the "All signs point to not looking good ..." part of your January 2nd VM then please let me know via VM or PM (Unless everything has already worked out for the better for you after all of this time [I hope]). I'm here for you~!
