Cardiac Arrest

The year is currently 3482. Twelve years ago, disaster struck on earth. A genetic mutation caused by an outbreak of a virus, called Feralism, spread among 30% of all newborn females. This mutation caused anyone infected to shift to a more animal-like state ,both mentally and physically, after reaching a certain level of maturity. Some grew tails and ears, while others had pointed ears with whisker-like marks on their cheeks.
In the end, the result was mirrored between every infected child. They became violent, and extremely territorial, attacking anyone who came near. It took almost a year to come up with an imperfect, but still useful vaccine. It was able to cure the virus, but at a terrible cost. The girls who were injected would stop aging physically once they reached age ten, and mentally at age two.
Though it was horrible, this was only one of two options. The other was to send them to the Zone of Optimism, or Z.O.O., where they would be "taken care of". Most parents chose to steer clear of this out of fear that their child would be hurt.
Rachel Blackwell woke up in bed, alone as usual. She had been living without her husband ever since he had been assigned to an off-world job five years ago. She never felt lonely, though, as she still had her daughter with her. Speaking of her daughter, it was just about time to check on her. She stood up, and walked out of her room.
