Requesting a new username

How does this work, exactly? Earlier in the week, like around Sunday or Monday, I tried requesting a new username and nothing happened. Does it go through some sort of process? It would be nice to at least get a "this username is unavailable" message back or something, but instead I didn't get any sort of notification.
