Go for it if you want to, hobbies can pay if you’re good at them. : p
Phone writing is inferior, can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to go and edit an autocorrect in a post, but that’s part of the poison.
A lack of style isn’t style. If your posts aren’t interesting then why bother? Especially when they approach me with wanting to RP and quality comes up in that discussion. We talk about the same thing - You don’t have to make long posts, you just have to make it interesting.” Then when they can’t and I ask them what’s up I get that response, and it’s like.... Clearly you’ve seen how I RP? If you’re intimidated by that then why come to me? That’s a whole other thing entirely, people shouldn’t be intimidated by writing style like that... It’s not hard to read or decipher, and I don’t expect people to RP like me.
Super funnel has the highest number of posts both because he’s been here since almost the site’s inception and a lot of people will RP with low standards. If neither party cares then it’s just a hollow RP, and although the point is for two people to share an RP the other aspect of it for me is readability, and it’s entirely devoid of that since you just can’t really read it, it’s boring.
That, and four word posts shared back and forth will naturally have a higher post number and frequency. Those RPs are several dozen pages of nothing usually. But I gotta’ reiterate, post length doesn’t equate to post quality. You can have a post that’s a sentence or two long that still has some vibrancy to it, that’s still fun to read and respond to.
I’m not damning short posts or trying to say that length is quality, I’m damning posts that are boring to read, force the other RPer to work harder to tow it and aren’t backed by even a little effort. At least in the circumstances where one person is pulling effort - if neither person gives a crap then you can have a poorly constructed RP between the both of you and neither person will be put out by the other.

I mean, I may not be against doing that, I do actually enjoy writing, I just never have ideas so people paying me to do something I enjoy (even if its just a little bonus cash every now and then, I'm a college student so I need it). I'd have to practice fantasy writing again though.
And I honestly wouldn't say thats true. There are plenty of RP's I've done where I didn't really care. Now our RP I've always cared about because it was an interesting and fun idea, something I was really able to get behind, and it wasn't just smut front to back, but while I'm not running any like that now, and try to avoid it, I've definitely done it before.
I was just giving the phone as an example (But god, I hate writing long stuff on my phone, typing on my laptop is so much better) and I wasn't excluding mental limitations for why something could be difficult. I just was using a personal anecdote in that case.
As for defending "I'm just not creative" and stuff like that, they don't really have to defend that. That's their style, they may evolve and become more creative as time goes on, they may not. Not trying to sound mean here, but look at Superfunnel, top poster on the website, almost never has a post thats more than a sentence. But some people like that or he wouldn't be where he is. Its up to you to decide what you like to rp with, but you can't dictate how someone else enjoys their rps.
-
People write for money all the time, and people commission smut stories fairly often. It does happen, I’ve even thought about it once or twice. : o
Avery, you know you never actually didn’t care about your RPing though. That’s kinda unfair to yourself, I can feel you trying even when there isn’t much text, because text doesn’t define a spirited post. You’re not part of the problem.
Right now, and as I have been for months, I’m using a phone. I could go use my laptop but I haven’t needed to, and it’s not inhibiting me. I’m not saying it doesn’t inhibit people, but the phone itself isn’t the problem with people. It’s the heart they put into it.
My point isn’t a physical limitation, it’s a mental one. And not a social issue but a matter of how much heart they put into their work. How do you defend “I’m just not creative” or “I dunno I just can’t put in the effort”? When the post equivalence is “the character turned they did a thing stuff happened” and they expect a decent reply to that, that’s not being an RP partner.
I wouldn’t be upset if they were legitimately trying, even if their posts weren’t great. Effort speaks. : /
-
I mean, when I used to write I did a few art trades with Cloud D, but no, I've never seen a writer take an actual commission.
Yeah that whole thing was strange, he seemed kinda flighty or something, idk.
And again, maybe in your mind its not, but for some people, that really is difficult for some variety of reasons. In Example; For a long time during our rp, I was completely bound to a phone, I didn't have a computer or anything. That made it much more tedious to even judge how long what I just wrote was and if I was really matching my partner in that aspect, or at least coming somewhat close. Then, while I may judge something as a good post, someone else would disagree. It didn't take me long to get out of "She did this thing", but it did take me a long time to really learn how to write detail and make it look decent. And even now, I go back to some of my rps from only maybe a year or so ago and wonder how anyone could possibly enjoy reading them.
-
You’ve never seen a writer take commissions? It’s a very standard practice. : o
But anyways, we did talk about those things and he did agree to 18+, which makes it worse that he had a self imposed preference for rejecting 18+ content and didn’t bring it up when presented to him.
I don’t need people to be ‘serious’, but I do need them to at least somewhat care. Like, I’m not asking anyone to be a novelist when they RP with me, but just care a little bit and not make all of the work my responsibility.
I’ll give you an example. If I RP with someone and they display that they lack the basics I’ll ask them to perhaps try upping their game. Getting a response like “I can’t, it’s too challenging” or “I just don’t have any creativity” are frankly unacceptable. It’s not that hard to RP with at least some merit, it’s absolute bottom basics stuff and if you’re pretending to RP just to shovel the work on someone else (or worse just don’t care about quality at all) then you shouldn’t be RPing.
It’s okay to be bad at it if you have the basic fundamentals down. Go into it with a plan to say something, say what you’re going to say, setup for the next thing to be said. That’s it! That’s as simple as it can get. Any extra you toss atop that is for quality and improvement, and I’d say people should try for that at least a little.
“she did the thing.” Is not enough. That doesn’t address anything that happened contextually, it doesn’t add to the story, it doesn’t give the other RPer anything to work off of and it’s a boring read for anyone not involved.

I've honestly never seen a fanfic artist take com's... commisions usually go towards comics if someone wants a story. But yes, I do get that. There aren't many people here I will rp with any more for that same reason. I'll occasionally make an exception for an RP that really isn't for anything other than fap fic, but otherwise no
And yes, but at the same time, sometimes you don't really know the limitations (the conversation you had with that one guy about 18+ stuff definitely should have been something that was mentioned previously but that's not always the case.) Like for example I tend to be a perfect test taker, nothing about an exam scares me. I took my first Alegebra exam for the first time in 3 years a few weeks ago, and I actually freaked out, despite going in believing I was totally okay. Sometimes stuff just sneaks up on you.
And to be fair, no, not everyone does take it that seriously. I mean, the RP's I have with diokno aren't really there for story, its just to get down and dirty when I want to, whereas what I do with silenceinthesnow and lilliel are RP's I actually take somewhat seriously
-
Well there’s validity there - Sure a decent fanfic artist (and we are talking stories here) will charge a decent price but for the quality that seems to be requested it feels more like a five - 10 dollar fapfic and making up that slack sucks.
Everyone to some degree has something they’re sorting out. I don’t think that is an excuse to be incapable at doing something that you actively set out to do knowing the limitations of that.
Like, if I set out to go on a date with some guy and all I replied in was three word sentences and flake out anytime stuff got hard for me, not only would I not be successful I would defeat the purpose for going out in the first place. : /
-
Well, no, they can't, because no decent artist is gonna take just 5 bucks for their work (I know you meant that figuratively, but still)
I think its because, and I don't mean to sound unkind here, but a lot of members on this site do suffer from mental illnesses. I have anxiety and depression, a lot of people here have aspergers or mild autism, and the list just grows. Sometimes that kind of stuff can just get overwhelming
-
People don’t have to post long, they just have to post with some darn decency and care about what they’re doing!
I had one guy earlier who straight up deleted my messages from his VM because he lacked the spine to own up to his mistakes. Why are people like that here? Why RO if you don’t freakinf like to do it?
Do people just want a cheap ride or some ‘material’ or something? Can’t they throw five bucks at a smut commissioner for that?
-
I understand sweetie. Well I will miss you if you decide to go, but I do see why. Even I'm not that great about writing out large posts that often, but I definitely feel you on that one. And I saw kind of weird conversations you had with some of the other users recently about your RPs and I know that would definitely annoy me to no end.
