For what purpose would the characters use a cyber key for?

I would prefer that they are simply required to remain in beast forms due to power drains from the sheilds. Makes them less able to resist and keeps them true to the namesake of transformers.
Also, due you mind cyber keys?

Well, this gives me an idea. Say that they get their full beast forms when they land, up to the point when the A.I. takes over. After that, their beast and robot forms become bonded together in an odd fused state, leaving them with humanoid shapes and animal features. A reason for that could be the A.I. redirecting power from the Energon filters to carry out babysitting tasks
