Fair point. Maybe their son is also affected by the curse, and Sammy ends up joining him in sharing the curse?

Like, he get's curious, goes and investigates, and pokes around the nursery, which triggers it.

Well... I kinda wanted it to be part of some crazy magic gone wrong.

But I could go for it being Sammy too nosy for his own good. But he wouldn't 'need' the diapers like he would if it was some sorta of weird effect of something.

An Idea: The neighbours have a son the same age as Sam, who they let indulge in babyish stuff and treat him accordingly.

Sammy gets caught mucking about in that room,and as a result, the families decide to treat Sammy the same, as part punishment, part indulgence.
