Makes sense oh and as I'm sure you know but just encase you don't ;steampunk isn't limited to just tech differences magic,aliens,creatures of the past alive,monsters,creatures/being of myth,supernatural stuff ,things working differently then real life ect ect.

Well, I imagined it as they follow rumors and buy intel on areas that the pirates either ignore, or refuse to plunder. Basically, they'd pick up on the stuff larger crews can't. Like treasure that is too valuable to split between a whole crew, or areas where a large ship would never be able to get into.

Yeah that does work aswell I just mentioned it to get it out of my head. Anyway how would you like the treasure hunters to be? Such as are they ones that will take contracts,a part of some guild ect ect

Sure, that idea works. Though it's more that the smiths use actual war hammers to smith with, than that there's magic involved.
And on the steampunk idea, I like it. That way, we can justify some modern items, like disposable products.

A little something that came to mind perhaps the Indrain smiths knows fighting magic that center around the items they use in there work for grafting . For example a smiths hammer could have a spell that works with it perhaps calling it ''hammer spark'' that when the hammer is slammed down on something once the spell is put into motion produces a bolt of electrical energy in the direction the hammer was slammed in. It a random ideal I know but in my vision of a warrior race bound in honor they'd have found ways for even those that build well buildings to have access to easy spells that would be mixed with the chosen graft/job they have

That was a given I just like reasons for the ab/dl stuff in a backstory

Well, we'd have the backstory of them being good friends before setting out on the treasure hunting as partners.
