OK. So you already picked your race.
You have 6 ability scores. 3 refer to your physical stats:
Strength, Dexterity and Constitution
the other 3 are the mental/personality stats:
Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma
Roll 4d6, meaning four 6-sided dice, ignore the lowest score, write up the result, repeat it 5 times, then assign those 6 numbers to your abilities as you like, then add the racial bonuses. Different classes take advantage of different abilities though, so do this only after you settled with a Class.
