Self contained stories are fine but it's true the most successful shows all have longer over arching plots that encourage you not to miss an episode. As for the nihilism is cool thing.... I don’t think many people actually look at it that way allot of people say the show makes them uncomfortable and challenges them. I think many people are looking at nihilism and wondering how the hell can someone think that way. Nihilism is a philosophical thought process given popularity by the works of H.P Lovecraft. Nihilism is upsetting too people because at the end of thr dsy if god really doesn't exsist and morality is reaaly just man made everything is pointless. The idea that in the grand scheme of the universe we don't mean anything is a challenging thought. I was nihilistic long before rick and morty came out though so I find it enteresting fir the how to gain such a cult following.

Yeah thats true Sundial the show just needs to be decent to stand up on its own with very little gimmicks and what gimmicks they have don't beat you over the head with the gimmicks .

Eh. I don't think shows need a gimmick to do well. I can't wait for people to just grow out of the whole 'nihilism is cool' thing. I think another issue with Rick and Morty is that there are a good portion of the fanbase that don't like it for the dark humour, just taking the cheap jokes about Pickle Rick and Szechuan sauce.

Self contained stories are good Devilnevercry you just need them to be decent , Heck alot of the old self contained story based sitcoms are still enjoyed for the fact they still have charm and the humor or story was good yet alot of the newer ones was dumber or lacking substance . It seems the laugh tracks was what really killed sitcoms before streaming sites even existed because some many makers used them at a piont that the new inexperienced writers and show runners had no clue what they was doing and believed laugh tracks would keep the show afloat but the laugh tracks barely did that if ever .

Netflix inadverntently brought about the death of american sitcoms much like many other things. The issue is with modern streaming and recording sodtware why would you watch unrelated 1 episode stories even south park realised continuing with that formula will eventually kill them. Modern cartoons need a hook be that dark adult humor and philosophical nihilism like( rick and morty) or strange background mysteryies (gravity falls) or emotionally charged socio political allogories (steven universe) these show work because there's something gripping about them adults will love and things carry over episode to episode more long overarching plots ect.

Diagla you may want to clarify what my little pony you are talking here as the current Gen had a two part opener in one of the seasons that had some Marxism thing going on brainwashing ponies and even had one of those sterotypical reprograming building set ups . So yeah MLP has in canon went sorta dark for a cartoon of its type in afew cases in the cartoon while the comics has had some darkish elements

If you want the ultimate combination of cringe, grimdark, and preachiness, watch the latest season of American Horror Story.

There's very little that isn't animated that I find watchable on TV. Most live-action shows, especially on Netflix, are either preachy, so grimdark they make 40k look like My Little Pony, king-cringe Louis CK cringy-cringefests, or some combination of all three.

I just find it annoying and irritating. If I want to laugh, I turn on a cheesy sitcom. What happened to those days?
