Welcome to the world of reboots/remakes and retconning then my friend as comics have had a long standing thing of doing such things.. While some even some manga writers/authors have been known to do retconning needlessly of things heck I can give you at least one good example of this if you want one on a manga author scenario …

Actually if you are talking anime wise at the source .. You must mean they made it be a lot like Modern anime as not only was it a reboot/remake but they also updated the setting and added modern anime stuff to it... I say this as quite frankly the old anime fit in with the varies other animes that was around when it was made and airing at the source and to a degree what was coming over to the West

As for mey preference... Well Subbed of course as sure some dubs I used to be perfectly fine with(not many mind you but still some) Yet after so many companies has revealed in the West to be loaded with Scumbags and monsters I am all for subs and I avoid the official subs as the translators and subbers of the companies has went from tweaking things to make sense in context in the subs to outright insert things that shouldn't be there and clearly is not what is said/meant or written on something.. For example of this some official subbed and dubbed anime has had lines about Gamergate... About western politics , About the 2016 presidential elections ...About Anime fans being monsters and trash of society.. About anime fans need to get a life and watch real shows... About male anime fans being monsters and doing things to woman ... Among other things like that which has been okayed and the western companies defending such matters till enough backlash calling them out happens and they redub and resub then to a degree
