"Good shot," Cody praised his wife. He took her free hand in his, and then they waddled over to the nest together.

They took the bodies and eggs back home with them.

When they were within ten meters of the house, a six-year-old boy emerged from the front door and toddled over to them. "Mummy! Daddy!"

"How have you been?" Penny asked, picking him up.

"I've been having fun with Nana," he answered. Cody's widowed mother had come to visit them.

"Oh, that's real nice to hear."

Jaxon, their son, nodded at that. "Mia's still asleep, though." He was referring to his toddler sister. During the summer months, she tended to sleep more than usual.

They popped in to look in on her, sleeping quite peacefully.

Sure enough, she was fast asleep. Cody's mother, Evie, emerged from the basement and said "Hello, dears. Catch anything good?"

"Two emus and their eggs," Cody said quite happily.
