Margaery returned the kiss with just as much affection. Then she took Sansa's hand in hers and declared "Come, my love. My husband and brother await."
The Queen and the Princess then made their way out of the Queen of Thorns' bedchamber. Lady and Brienne of Tarth accompanied them out of the Maidenvault and through the hallways of the Red Keep. Soon, they arrived in the king's bedchamber in Maegor's Holdfast. Renly and Loras were already seated at the room's small dining table. The two of them were sharing a kiss when the ladies entered. They broke the kiss to stand up and politely bow their heads to Margaery and Sansa. "Good evening, Margaery, Sansa," Loras greeted them, "Please, take a seat." At the same time, Arya held Catelyn's hand as the two of them and Nymeria headed for Robb's own quarters. Arya heard they would be having dinner with another person. A woman, actually. |
"Indeed," Renly agreed with a warm smile. "Welcome, Princess Sansa, and my dear Queen Margaery." He came around the table and kissed Sansa's hand, and gave Margaery a gracious kiss on the cheek. "By the Seven, you both look absolutely beautiful this evening!"
"Thank you, your Grace," Sansa said, smiling and curtseying to the king. "Come, please," Renly added. "Sit and join us, make yourselves comfortable. We have many happy things to discuss, and a delicious supper to enjoy as well." Renly and Loras held the ladies' chairs so Margaery and Sansa could sit down gracefully and comfortably, before returning to their own seats. |
The table was square-shaped, so it had no real head. Renly sat at the end that was farthest from the door and closest to the balcony. Loras sat to his right; Margaery to his left. Sansa sat across from the king, in-between her fiancee and her lover.
The first course of the meal was a type of seafood stew made of clams, mussels, and scallops. It was a delicacy in the coastal holdfasts of the Seven Kingdoms, and one of Renly's favorites. Loras had grown quite partial to it, too. "This stew is wonderful," Margaery commented in approval. They would get to business soon enough. For the moment, however, she wanted to enjoy the meal and have some pleasant, casual conversation instead. "I'm glad you think so," Loras told his sister. He looked to Sansa and asked "What do you think of it, my princess? Are you fond of seafood?" |
"It's not something we have often at Winterfell, my lord," Sansa explained, "though I've grown somewhat accustomed to it since arriving at King's Landing. I enjoy clams in particular, and tonight's stew is quite delicious."
"Very good," Renly said, smiling. "I hope you ladies enjoyed your afternoon," the King went on, "after this morning's spectacle." Sansa looked at Margaery and shared a knowing smile, before turning back to Renly. "We did, your Grace. We had a nice long rest in the Maidenvault." "And well-deserved," Renly replied. "You both handled yourselves quite impressively along with the Queen of Thorns. And your wolf, Lady, was quite formidable." "Thank you, you Grace," said Sansa. "It was quite gratifying to finally see justice done." "It was indeed," Renly agreed. "Your father, my brother, and many others will surely rest easier now." |
Loras grinned at that. "Yes, it was inexplicably rewarding to see that inbred bastard mess his nappy in front of the entire city. I also heard how your Lady was the one who made Joffrey wet himself."
"That is correct," Margaery recalled, smiling at her brother, "It was a hilarious spectacle to say the least. And though beheadings may not be an orthodox topic of discussion, I could talk all about today's execution and it would not make me feel the slightest bit nauseous." "I know just what you mean," Loras claimed. He then spooned out a few of the clams in his portion of the stew, and he placed them in Sansa's bowl instead. "If you are so fond of clams, my princess, then please; have some of mine. I would be happy to indulge you." Margaery smiled again. The Knight of Flowers certainly knew how to treat a lady. |
"Thank you, Ser Loras," Sansa said, smiling dreamily at her betrothed. The foursome finished their stew and the dishes were cleared away.
"Now then," King Renly said, sipping at his wine. "Perhaps we should discuss the... somewhat unorthodox nature of our arrangement. It is hardly a secret anywhere in the Seven Kingdoms that Ser Loras and I are... quite fond of each other's company. Nevertheless, my dear Queen Margaery and I enjoy an otherwise faithful, happy, and affectionate marriage, that will soon produce an heir to the Iron Throne. And I believe it will be the same for you and Ser Loras, Princess Sansa." "Yes, Your Grace," Sansa agreed, smiling. |
Loras nodded his head to agree. "While Renly is and will always be my first love, I believe you would make me a wonderful wife, my princess. My dear sister speaks very highly of you, and I must confess I am impressed by how you managed to endure your captivity. No one weak or faint of heart could have handled herself as well as you did."
Margaery lightly grinned at her brother's obseration. "Loras is quite correct. And you may have heard that when Renly and I were married, the wedding was not followed by the bedding. That is actually true, but the reason is not because he is more attached to Loras. The reason is that he was waiting until the Lannisters were defeated to consummate our marriage. Thus, he and I decided we will finally have our proper bedding ceremony on the very same night when you and Loras have your own." |
