The Worst Job Ever
James packed his bag for a night's stay. He was hired by his mom's friend to babysit her daughter, who he had never met. It was a bit of a last minute thing, and he wasn't even completely sure he was getting paid. All he knew was that his mom had woken him up this morning and told him to pack his bags and that she had found him a job for the weekend. It was currently 10 o'clock on a Saturday morning as he needed to be over at her house by 11. He sighed and finished packing, getting up as he went downstairs, telling his mother goodbye as he went into his car. It was going to be a long drive.
"Mom! I don't need a sitter! Haven't I proved that already?" Sarah whined, following her mother around, watching her pack for a business trip. "I'm twelve years old, almost thirteen. I can be on my own for a day!"
"Now," her mother scolded, still packing. "This James boy is very nice. I just don't want you wrecking the house with your friends while I'm gone, okay sweetie? I promise it won't be that bad." Sarah groaned, pouting. And then... she got an idea. |
He looked at the clock, "10:56," He said outloud, as he came to a stop by what he assumed was the girls house. He saw a car by the door, assuming it was her mom's and parked in the driveway. He came out, and saw a lady walking out the door holding several bags. "Do you want some help," He asked, walking over and helping her put the bags in the car. "I'm James," He said introducing himself. "Julia's son. She's said you needed someone to babysit your daughter," He explained, looking in the house, through the open door, trying to get an idea of the girl's age. He hoped he didn't have a toddler on his hands. He did not want to have to deal with diaper duty all weekend long.
The young girl, full of boundless energy and life, was slumped on the couch eating sugary cereal and watching cartoons. "Hmm," she said, as way of greeting, before watching the cartoons with rapt attention once more. Her outfit conveyed girlish innocense, hair in pigtails, stockings on legs.
She had decided to give James one chance to be a good boy. After all, she did not want to have to deal with diaper duty all weekend. |
He smiled at her and walked in the house, heading to the living room. "What are you watching," He asked, sitting on one of the chairs. Then without waiting for her answer, he got up, speaking to her mom, "Ok, thank you, I'll call you if I need anything," He said nodding his head as she gave him the various emergency numbers, and other details. "And what can I do for food? Do you want us to order something, or do you have any leftovers for me to feed her?"
"Food's in the fridge, and there's money in the drawer by the sink just in case," Sarah's mother said, before saying goodbye and walking to her car.
Sarah didn't bother to so much as glance up, munching on cereal and staring at the screen all the while. Even if James had been paying attention, she wouldn't have answered his question. |
James said, "Good-bye," to her mother and turned his attention to Sarah, and smiled. "Hello," He said gently, "Sarah, I'm talking to you," He repeated, finding himself a little annoyed by her ignoring her. He bit his lip, "Come on, I have to watch you for the night and tomorrow, you can at least speak to me." He glanced at the TV seeing the cartoons, and found it a bit obnoxious.
Sarah glanced up for a minute, shrugging. *This giy is soooo obnoxious,* she thought, before saying, "Uh, Hi." And with that, she continued ignoring him and returned her attention to the telivision, blaring cartoons. He hadn't crossed any lines, yet... But it was a couple minutes in and she already didn't like this guy.
He frowned a little. "Well hello to you too," He teased, leaning back on the reclining chair. He then looked at the TV, "What show is this," He asked, trying to figure it out. "It looks familiar. Something about ponies?" He asked unsure.
"My Little Pony," Sarah said. "G2. We've got it on DVD. Friendship is Magic sucks ass, I prefer the older ones," she said, rolling her eyes at James before returning them to the LCD monitor displaying the cartoon. A lateral move fpr James, at least he was taking an interest.
