After the "death" of Queen Victoria, the throne was passed on to her son, King Edward VII.

He was thus set up to take Great Britain into the 20th century, with both his reign, and his family.

His wife Alexandra of Denmark could tell her husband was at least a little apprehensive. As such, she wondered if there was something she might do to comfort him.

"I don't quite know what to do, darling," he admitted. "I have to step up to the plate to pick things up from Mummy. That's a tall order if there ever was one."

Alexandra sighed and hugged him. "I know, dear. But do not think you will have to face these trials alone. I have stood by your side for 38 years. I am not about to forsake you now."

"I owe so much of what I am to you," he said.

Alexandra just smiled and tenderly embraced him. Just then, their son, George entered. "Father, Mother, I am not interrupting anything, am I?"

"No, George, things are fine. What's the matter?"

"It is the House of Commons," the prince reported. "They are growing restless."

Edward sighed a bit at that and steeled himself.
