The nation of Dunwall had once been the height of prosperity in its continent. But one day very suddenly, it was struck by a plague, driving all the capital's rats insane and bloodthirsty.

The situation had become so dire that Empress Jessamine had dispatched the Lord Protector, her clandestine lover Corvo Attano, to find a means to end the virulence.

He had traveled far to foreign lands in order find a solution. Afterwards, he had made his way to return home and report.

He was welcomed back quite warmly by the Empress' subjects. Even the Lord Regent Hiram Burrows, who was normally a cold and detached man, was strangely receptive. "Her Majesty requests your presence on the veranda, my lord."

Corvo nodded and made his way over to where Jessamine was waiting.

On the way there, he was waylaid by a certain 10-year-old girl. "Corvo! You're back!" she said excitedly.

"Yes, Lady Emily, and it's good to see you, too," he said. She was the Empress' daughter, whom was thoroughly pampered by Jessamine, especially with regards to a certain condition.

The princess giggled and moved to hug him. "I hope you'll be able to stay a while; I missed you."

"I will," Corvo said. "Especially because you need your mother and I so often at night."

Emily blushed at that, saying, "On that note, I had a bit too much juice to drink this morning. Would you mind?"

"I would be honored, Your Highness," Corvo said, taking her to a nearby changing table.
