Way too close and some the city's saviors, the Eva pilots, are making no secret of that. Specifically Shinji Ikari who is sitting in the cockpit as the fluids are drained with his head in his hands crying. He came close to another near death experience and it is really weighing in on him mentally and emotionally. The cockpit is opened and people around can see the crying boy sitting there not coming of his own will. There's not much will power he has left.
