Indeed, he'd suffered significant back injuries, and while he wasn't technically paralyzed, despite his efforts, he couldn't move anything except his head, shoulders, arms and hands. So, he was effectively bound to either bed or a special wheelchair that was more like a hover scooter that could easily climb stairs without effort.
