Curious about how the gallery works

This is just a question out of curiosity:

How does the organization of pictures and art on the homepage work? There are apparently two sections for 'New art', (Residents and non-residents,) and then when you click 'See all' it just routes you through the search engine for all pictures, but how does it determine what pictures get put on the home page? I initially assumed it just posted the newest images as they were uploaded, but I've noticed that there's always a few pictures that either are never posted to the homepage or just have a long delay between being posted on the homepage and the gallery. Anyone care to clarify what's going on here?

resident artist and non-resident artists are two different sections within the gallery, you could call them top level categories.

basically put the front page script searches each of these categories for new uploads from the relevant section and its subcategories (the artists folders) so its not random and the links that take you to a search page will take you to a search of those top level categories and all their subcategories.
