Equestria had long prided itself as the center of diplomacy and knowledge but even so, there were parts of the world that were unexplored. Among those was the far tropical reaches, rumored to be home to an advanced civilization. Princess Celestia was intrigued and so she dispatched the Elements of Harmony along with Spike and Starlight Glimmer to make contact with them.

And so, that is how the seven ended up on the exploration airship RCAS Golden Dawn heading out to the farthest reaches of the world.

The RCAS Golden Dawn was Equestria's flagship vessel. A sleek wood and brass airship powered by magical gems, it slowly but steadily cruised through the air. Despite it being as opulent as a Canterlot noble's air yacht, it was a utilitarian vessel built for research and exploration.

And that was what the Elements of Harmony, Spike and Starlight Glimmer were doing.

As there was nothing much to see outside, Spike was inside the cabin he shared with Twilight Sparkle. Unusually, he was wearing a set of goggles that currently rested on his forehead but other than that, he was naked as usual.

An open Power Ponies comic book lay in front of him on the desk as the young Drake busied himself with reading up on notes from previous expeditions.

WHile Spike was reading through his comic, Twilight was lying on her bed close by, with her back, and backside, facing Spike as she was reading through different journals and books, trying to find any information, however scarce, about the kind of civilization they were going to be seeing once they had landed

"Anything?" Spike asked as he looked up from his notes.

He took another look at the path they had taken and overlaid upon one of the older expedition maps. The path literally ran off the map.

Fluttershy was on the deck of the airship. Below them were harsh rocky plains that seemed devoid of life save for a few sparse tents. A whale-like bird flew past the the ship. The yellow Pegasus took some brief notes on it.

Thanks to her knowledge of animals, she was serving as the expedition's zoologist/vet.

"Nothing much really besides hearsay and guesses, so I'm just trying to memorize as much as I can about appearances, as trying to take culture from these findings may not end too well once we land" she said as when he looked up he would really only see the back of her head and her behind

Fluttershy would soon get a visit from another member of the mane six as they snuck up behind her and suddenly gave her a friendly pat on the rear "hey there Flutters" it was Rainbow Dash, the very quick and energetic pegasus, who served as the team's eye in the sky and spy basically

"Eep!" Fluttershy squeaked as her rump was patted. She blushed. "Dash! D...don't sneak up on me like that!"

She looked around. Still nothing much to see. Except now that they were crossing from desert to what looked like grassy plains.

Spike shrugged and got off his seat. "Hope you're having better luck than I am." He pointed to his work on the wooden table. Not that Twilight could see it. "I traced our path onto some of these maps and they literally run off the map."

His stomach growled. "I'm going to the kitchen to go grab a bite. Want anything?"

(OOC - Humans or no Humans? I was picturing a few cameos from them thanks to a portal connection. Bonus points for a sequel idea.)

Dash giggled a bit as she stood next to the shy pony "Oh come on Flutters, not like I scared ya that bad" she said with a smile as she looked out at the expanse for a moment before down at FLutter's notepad "Whats in the sketchpad?"

Twilight looked over her shoulder at the maps he was tracing, at least as best as she could anyway, before she thought about his question "Just a small snack please, I'm not very hungry"

"Oh, it's um, a new animal I saw. It has the morphology of a cetacean but its pectoral fins bear more resemblence to the wings of a bird. In addition, it appears to subsist on aeroplankton, seeing as it lacks teeth." Fluttershy looked over her notebook. Plenty of room left...and there weren't many new animals she could see.

"I wonder how Twilight and Spike are doing," she asked.

Spike headed to the galley. It was empty seeing as it was not time for dinner yet. Regardless, he got himself some gems and a hayburger for Twilight. He returned to his room and placed the burger on Twilight's desk. "I'm going to take a short nap," he said. "Wake me if something important happens."

The Drake took off his goggles and climbed into bed where he soon fell asleep.

Rainbow dash just blinked as she heard her description of the creature "Um, in english please Fluttershy" she said as she wasn't the smartest memeber of the group, but she had her perks, like her speed, loyalty, and dedication "And I think they are in her room still'

SHe smiled as she took the burger "Thanks Spike, have a good rest" She said as she took a few bites before setting it to the side and continued to read to try and find any kind of common theme among the stories she was reading, but only ones so far seemed to be they were an advanced race, but also resembled creatures from supposed ancient eras

"It's a bird-whale," Fluttershy replied. There was really nothing much to see thanks to the land being featureless prareies.

She inhaled the cool, sweet air. "Wonder what what new animals and creatures we'll see?"

A few hours later, dinner was announced.

Spike entered the galley and took a seat while he waited for the others to arrive. The odor of vegetable stew filled the enclosed space as one of the cooks ladled out the food. Toast points were also provided as an accompaniment.

Fluttershy was the next to join in. "Hello, Spike," she said. "Having a productive day?"

The Drake yawned. "Yeah. Not much is known about where we're heading though. Twi's got some bits and pieces from all the records."

She shrugged "I dunno, but I hope to find something fast that I can race with!" she said and flapped her wings happily at the thought

Applejack came in behind the two of them with Rainbow Dash as APplejack sat down "Seems like we got enough food n water to last another week before things start goin bad" said the earth pony
