The Antebellum South was one of the last places in the first world which practiced slavery. Any Africans or African Americans who lived south of Ohio were subjected to forced servitude without pay, human decency, and often without sufficient sustenance. Most would not even dare escape, on fear of what their owners would do if they were caught. But 20-year-old Jessica Moore was more determined than most. She had successfully fled her South Carolinan plantation, and she had already made it as far as northern Virginia.

By now, she was quite on edge, always anticipating that she'd spring a trap and be caught and taken back. That fear propelled her to keep going, even when she was fatigued.

Fortunately, having worked on a plantation all her life, she knew a few things about living off the land and keeping a low profile. She had managed to get all the way through North Carolina without coming into contact with anyone. But she was not in the clear yet. Once she reached Maryland, she could rest easy.

It was deep in the middle of the night as she made her way through a patch of forest. There were scattered homes nearby.

She crept through the town quietly, making certain not to make any noise.

Suddenly, a door began to open, and Jessica froze.

A young man was exiting the building with a sack of flour. It was so dark out that he did not seem to notice Jessica at first.

Just then, Jessica accidentally stepped on a small twig.

The young man heard that, and then he called out suspiciously "Who's there?"

Jessica kept completely still, trying to blend it, clamping her own mouth.
