This was especially the case for a particular noblewoman who loved her son more than anything in the world, yet was not on the fairest of terms with his father.

Anna Karenina was a woman who, for lack of a better expression, was torn in different directions, without a clear idea of which one to take.

On the one hand, her son Sergei meant everything to her. On the other, she was not at liberty to see him whenever she wished. She wanted more than anything to remedy this.

The matters of the heart were especially making it more difficult, as her husband Karenin had no particular love for her or vice versa, while Anna was drawn to Count Alexei Vronsky, a dashing cavalry officer. It was all tugging at her every which way but loose, to the point she felt she was on the verge of mental collapse.

A part of her was tempted just to wait for the next train to arrive, take a giant leap forward, and end it all. But the greater part of her conscience could not do such a horrible thing to Sergei. "There must be something I can do," she muttered determinedly.

Anna then realized maybe she could split the difference and let herself be greatly injured, so she could recover. With great determination and a clear conscience, she did exactly that, making sure to be in just the right position.

There were some screams, following by a jolt of searing pain. She struggled just to stay conscious, but she would not die.

Anna fully came to hours later, finding herself propped up in bed.

"Take it easy, my lady," a gentle voice beckoned her, approaching the bed and placing soft hands on her shoulders.
