Shadow -> Neo Shadow -> ???? -> Darksider
Does anyone else notice that the Darksiders looks like a shadow expect a with hair and big heart shape hole in his chest. I'm starting to think that the shadows go through some sort of transformation after they collect a certain amount of hearts. For me the 3rd stage heartless would be called an "Alpha Shadow" - a renegade heartless that will kill other heartless for it's hearts.
Only some heartless manage to make it up to Neo Shadow to Alpha Shadow but after Alpha shadow they can't transformed to Darksider. Unless they kill other heartless to take it's hearts.
Here is kinda how I see it
Shadow -> Neo Shadow -> Alpha Shadow -> Darksider
Shadow would transform into a Neo Shadow after collecting 10 hearts
A Neo Shadow would transform into a Alpha Shadow after collecting 50 hearts.
(Usually after a Neo Shadow transforms to a Alpha Shadow they can't become a Darksider. But they can transform into a Darksider by killing heartless and collecting there hearts a total of 1000 hearts)
