I've never watched the show but I was thinking of watching the 2 movies that toonami is airing tomorrow. What do I need to know about the show to understand it?

HOH. THEY'RE AIRING THEM. Now I'm actually kinda hyped. The movies are pretty dope, I enjoyed them. I saw them prior to watching the original series, and overall I enjoy the movies more than the original. They're really cool to see, so DEFINITELY give it a watch!

The movies are essentially a remix of the original show. They change some fights and some characters show up in different spots than before, but it's just about the same show. Just, updated aesthetically and redubbed. Consider it the directors cut.

Personally I watched the original before the rebuild/reboot/re-imagining whatever you wanna cal lit, and while it's not necessary, its would be better to to better understand the changes and the impact on the rebuild that the original series had, there are very subtle connections but for the first two you shouldn't need to watch the series, but you should be able to find it free online.
