"Calm down; I'm not going to hurt you.", the technician said, putting a hand on Abigail's shoulder to make her sit back down in the pod. "In fact, we think you are one of the best people suited for the task of...well... it will all be explained upstairs in your orientation." Giving Abigail a big smile, she pulled out a machine that looked like a blood pressure reader, but with a full tablet display on the end. The woman took Abigail's arm, wrapping the sensing end to her body and reading off the tablet display. As she monitored the readout on the display and took a few notes, she hummed softly to herself in a tune that she was sure would calm the girl. The technician didn't remember the name, but it was one of the Earth-based songs she had been told in training that people on Earth liked. The technician liked it as well, but it was amazingly primitive, what with the instantaneous music generator AI having been perfected years ago.
"Are all of your basic needs satisfied?", the technician asked, removing the sensor machine from Abigail's arm and putting it into a drawer. "Your orientation will take several hours and we need you to comprehend everything that it said, for it is of the utmost importance to why you are here in the first place."

The technician only made things more confusing for Abigail? Best suited for what task? She couldn't understand anything. Then, it looked like the technician was taking her vitals, but Abigail had never seen that kind of machine before. It was yet another thing to add to her growing list of questions. When the technician asked about her basic needs, Abigail nodded. "Yeah, I suppose they are, " she said, scratching the back of her neck nervously. "But what is this orientation you keep telling me about? "

"I'm not entirely sure what it's about myself, as I'm only here to make sure the equipment works correctly and transport you wherever you need to go. Speaking of which, I should take you to meet with the project coordinator for your orientation.", the technician said. "By the way, my name'sAevu, but you can just call me Ava."
Taking Abigail by the hand and pulling her out of the tube, Ava walked toward the back of the craft. About halfway down the length of the floor was a cyllindrical tube made of clear material. As the pair approached, the tube's base rotated to reveal a hollow inner platform about the size of a large table. Ava led Abigail into the opening, and as soon as they were inside, the gaurd around the outside of the mini-room turned back to its original position and the platform they were standing on silently accelerated upwards. A few seconds later, the platform stopped at the next floor of the craft and the wall turned again to let both girls out into the main level of the starcruiser.
The view was stunning: nearly the entire wall on both ends of the craft was made of transparent material such that the traveller could see every star in space if they wanted to. The room was also lavishly decorated with soft couches, rugs and a kitchen at the far end. Without the view, it could have been mistaken for a small apartment. Ava led Abigail through the large room and into a smaller rear hallway with several doors on each side of it, and opened the third door to the right.
The room was sparsley furnished compared to the main room, with only two large chairs facing each other, and a small table in between them. One of the chairs was occupied by a woman of about 35 years dressed in a traditional black earth dress with little white sequins dotting the surface. Turning her head to look at them, she spoke to Ava.
"Aevu, why don't you leave Abigail with me and take a break for a little bit. You deserve it after yesterday." Hearing these words, Ava nodded, and without saying another word, exited the room, leaving Abigail with this new person.
"Hello Abigail", the woman beckoned, indicating the chair opposite her. "Why don't you sit down and make yourself comfortable. We're going to be here for a long time, so don't feel the need to be formal."

Abigail nodded at Ava's answer. She really would have to wait until this mysterious orientation started to see exactly what it was. As Ava led her through the space craft, Abigail's jaw was permanently dropped. 'All of this technology... it's so advanced! Just where am I?' Abigail wondered to herself in shock.
The girl was even more shocked upon entering the main level. "N-No, it can't be... " Abigail said to herself in a small voice, but she couldn't deny what was right in front of her. Without a doubt, she was in space. However, before she could wonder why, Abigail found herself in a room with another, older looking woman.
At the woman's request, Abigail sat down in the chair opposite her. She had many questions, and she hoped this woman had the answers. "What is this place? How are we in space?" Abigail asked nervously. "Why am I here? "

“Stay calm; I'll explain.”, the woman soothed Abigail. “You've been chosen to take part in the Unification Project, which is probably the most important project this universe will experience for the forseeable future. As you might have guessed, we are not human. We call ourselves the Trivenains, and have been developing in our corner of the universe for about 8,700 years. About five years ago in your time, we discovered your star system completely by accident, and have been enthralled watching you and trying to understand every facet of your lives ever since. Even with all the knowledge we have gained, however, our governing bodies are still trying to figure out what exactly to do with your kind. With all the violence in your past and all the depictions you have of turning against extraterrestrials such as us, we are not sure that we can safely integrate you into our culture without risking our own development.”
“That's where you come in, Amanda. Over the course of this project, you will be experiencing the lifestyle of a human living among Trivenians assuming we fully integrated your kind with us. You will be living with an upper middle class woman named Jennifer, and will get to follow her through Trivenian society, experiencing daily life on our home planet. Throughout your time with us, you will be constantly monitored to determine not only your physical adaptation and overall mental health, but what aspects of our world would need to be changed to make the change as successful as possible.”
“There is one other thing: Unfortunately, your current form poses too much of a potential danger to the everyday citizens of Trivenia you will be living amongst, and also won't provide nearly as much valuable data as other alternatives. For these reasons, the council in charge of this project unanimously voted to return you back to the mental state of a young child. We understand that this may be an inconvenience, but Jennifer has been specially trained to assist you in your daily routine, and we believe that you will eventually come to enjoy the lack of physical cares. Your mind has already begun to regress to this state, so if you suddenly find yourself unable to do daily activities or craving baby food, the crew will help you out in that regard.”
Leaning back in her chair, the older woman smiled warmly at the newest member of the starship. “By the look on your face, I know you have lots of questions. Please, ask away: I'll sit here until we land if need be.”

The woman was correct in assuming that Abigail had many questions. She was on a space ship speaking to an alien; there was a lot that needed explaining! And that wasn't even mentioning the fact that they were going to regress her mind to a child. However, one thing stood out to Abigail that she needed to know first. "My first question is why did you choose me? Of all the people on Earth, why are you taking me to your planet?" Abigial needed to know; she had never been a part of something this important in her whole life!

"I wasn't the one to choose you, so I don't really know, but it's probably a combination of physical, mental and regressional factors. Whatever is was though, somebody saw something in you and had enough power to push thier descision through. If you don't know, then maybe you'll find out when the mission is complete."

Abigail crossed her arms. It made sense that this woman wouldn't know something so specific, but it annoyed her a bit all the same. Abigail decided to make her next question a bit more general. "Why do I have to be mentally regressed? What makes me so dangerous with my normal intelligence? " asked Abigail. Such an advanced race of aliens would surely have nothing to fear from a 20-year-old student, right?

"We're not really scared of what you might do intentionally, but that you might not realize the danger you've caused until it's too late. Our civilization is designed much differently, and we are challenged by much different problems each day; something that looks like a piece of cake to you may actually be an incubation vessel for highly volatile bacteria that incubate perfectly in your acidic stomach and...you get the point. We've tried to mitigate the dangers add much as we can especially in the area you'll be interacting with, but some problems just can't be mitigated without massive damage to us. There's also the scientific angle to consider, and we want to study how your bodily systems react without bias from your chosen activities. For example, there are some technologies of ours that a human would be scared to death to even go near, but one of us would never even hesitate to interact with. Also, we feel it's better for your focus and well being that you aren't homesick during our time together. We will be giving you back all your memories at the end of our study, so it will be like you've had a separate side life for a little while."
The woman sighed, leaning back in her chair. "Besides, there's nothing you can really do to reverse the process seeing as its already started, so just don't worry about it and everything will turn out fine."
