Everyone had thought Morris Gutierrez to be a model student. However, for much of his life, he had been moonlighting as a shop lifter. He had managed to steal more than three thousand dollars' worth of merchandise. Until one day he was finally caught. His case was an open-and-shut one, and he had been sentenced to two years in a place known as "The Florence Nightingale Penitentiary." Right now, he was in the backseat of his parents' car, being driven to that foundation.

There were no words between them, because this was a moment where it wasn't clear what, if anything, could really be said. They just stared ahead as they approached their destination.

Morris had to admit; it did not look so bad at a glance. But a penitentiary was a penitentiary, and he was not looking forward to the next twenty-four months.

Guards were waiting to escort him.

Morris managed to exchange a somewhat fond farewell with his parents, and then he was escorted to the Warden's office.

He then looked on as he stood right before the Warden at the assigned space.

The Warden was a redheaded woman in her late thirties or early forties. Despite her gruff appearance, she said in a calm voice "You must be Mr. Gutierrez."

"Yes, ma'am," Morris said respectfully.

She held his case file in her hands, looking it over. "I've studied your case, and I'm convinced there is more to your kleptomania than appears suggest. Tell me; how much of what you stole did you actually steal for yourself?"

Morris looked up. "I don't have a number, only that it was very little."
