Ever since it was first invented in the 6th century, chess had long been dominated by men, especially in the higher ranks. But in the 1960s, there was a female prodigy who had shown tremendous aptitude for it.

Beth Harmon showed the fact that she could move around the board like no one else had ever seen before. Clearly, her mind was something else.

She had never known her father, and her mother had died when she was young, so she had grown up in a boarding school. There she had learned how to play chess from the institution's custodian.

Beth seemed to intuit what her opponent was going to do before they themselves did, and she seemed prepared for anything.

When she was in high school, she had even been able to enter various chess tournaments, winning handsome cash prizes every time.

Right now, she was at home, sitting in contemplation.

Her adoptive mother, Alma Wheatley, was a bit of a vino, yet she had always treated her kindly. "I really am proud of you, Beth, darling," she insisted as they sat together at the dinner table.

Alma smiled at Beth as they continued to eat. "Still, I feel as though I could be doing more for you. You're my daughter; daughters should be pampered by their mothers."
