Rules and Pointers to More Efficient Roleplaying
Hello DA, and welcome to my Roleplaying help session. I would calmly request that everyone here takes a gander at it, whether you are an advanced roleplayer or one who is still dipping their feet. This guide will help you follow some of the basic guildlines of roleplaying, so that you and your partner have efficiency and above all, a good time.
There are probably two primary rules other than the code of ethics that you follow as a civil human being. Two rules that on this site, are broken very often.
1. First and foremost is GODMODDING. Though very few combat roleplays happen here, godmodding can take other forms. For example, your character always has SOME flaw. Don't make your characters only flaw the need for diapers. My main OC, Alexis, she's got tons of them. She's shy, she's taken aback by simple situations, she's extremely emotion, she has a very low pain tolerance... and the list goes on. Your character shouldn't be a super genius who never has any trouble with anything except for diapers... it'll kill the roleplaying experience by making the other person feel inadaquite (Not sure if I spelled that one right :P).
2. The second, and probably most common on this site, METAGAMING. This one is a lesser known rule of roleplaying, but it is vital all the same. Remember, you should never use knowledge that YOU have but you CHARACTER does NOT. Observe every situation from your character's point of view. Do not bring your omniscient eyes into the roleplaying, as it will ruin it. It brings your character out of character, and shatters the feel of the RP.
That's it for the rules portion as of now, but there might be more later on... I'm not sure yet. Those two are the most common in any roleplaying
Now to help those out around here who have trouble adding detail, here's a FEW helpful hints:
1. When desperate for detail... describe what your character is wearing. Several RP boards require more than 1-2 lines per post, and if you are struggling to meet that quota, feed the left side of the brain. Even if you have already described the thick padding between your characters legs, what's it doing? Is it crinkling? Is it absorbing? Is it slightly offcenter thanks to a sudden shift in body position? Diapers are just one example... you can do shirts, pants, skirts, etc.
2. Take the characters SENSES into consideration. What do they smell, see, hear, taste, and feel. Describe whatever their senses are picking up in vivid detail. Now, don't rely describe smelling a messy diaper, as that wouldn't appeal to many people. Instead, describe how the wet diaper FEELS between the characters legs. Describe what they are SEEING as best you can, like painting a picture for the reader. If this is Fap material, you'll find it much more enticing if your partner and you use tons more detail. Then your mental image will come out more crystal clear, rather than fragmented.
3. The next thing to remember is EMOTION. This could probably be considered one of the most vital parts, and one of the most excluded parts of Roleplaying. You're character isn't just a robot. Many people on the board simply describe actions, what their character is doing, but treat your character as a real person. If you base your character off yourself, you'll have a WAY easier time portraying how you would feel in your characters situation. If you know a character from a series EXTREMELY well, then you might be able to get away with roleplaying as him or her, but don't overstep your boundaries. You have to know that character through and through, not just history and background. You have to know EXACTLY how said character might respond to any given situation. If you can't pull off playing as a really cute anime girl whom you barely know, then don't try. It may disappoint you at first, but you will definately roleplay way better in the long run.
4. The final point I would give is that you make sure that you are PROGRESSING the roleplay. Don't just respond to your partners actions, but rather throw in something to help push the plot forward. If you don't, than you and your partner will get bored, and the RP will end very quickly. Make sure you ask a question, set up the other person to take an action, or do something. Simply responding to what they are doing, well that kills the RP. And make sure you don't just say "and wet/messed his/her diaper" because if your character is wearing jeans... the other person's character won't be able to tell your character is wet or messy.
5. Lastly, tell a STORY. Roleplaying is encompassing yourself within the role, so you can further enjoy a fantasy like illusion created by you and however many other people. Make them want to read what you have to say, make them crave the details. Make them think of you as their favorite author, where they can't wait for your next book to come out... but in this case, that book is a post.
Now, taking those three accounts in mind, let's see how a short little post can turn into something much better.
Before: "Lexi sat on the bus, a wet diaper between her legs. A staff member came by and checked her 'Present' for role."
After: "Lexi nervously tapped her foot against the hard linolium floor of the bus. She hated this. She was so scared of what might be coming once this bus stopped... so scared of where she might be going... Heck, as proof, the thick padding between her legs was already wet. She was a timid little creature, her sparkling blue eyes in direct contrast to her light brown hair. She kept her little mouth tucked into a frown as she looked out the window. She saw the arid desert, and found the name completely fitting to the surrounding. 'Stupid boring bus ride... I can't believe my parents signed me up for this...' She thought to herself gently. A staff member came down the aisles carrying a clip board, which scared the poor girl. She quickly ducked her head behind the seat, pushing her soft pink skirt in between her legs to hide the clearly sodden diaper. Her fears in the man were misplaced though, as he simply checked her off on the seating chart as Alexis Warner, and walked away. Lexi kept her head down, still not sure of what to do, unable to notice anything else going on on the bus. She remained focuesed solely on herself, not wanting to make any trouble for anyone."
There you go. I described the setting, her emotions, her appearance, two aspects of clothing, and I left room for someone else to come in and interact with her.
I hope this was helpful, and if you read the whole thing, thank you VERY much for sticking through with it. I really appreciate the dedication you had to my helpful guide! I really hope that this can bring about change, if only for one person. However, if you aren't roleplaying where you think you should be, practice makes perfect. So get out there and roleplay dang it!
