You could have easily done something with strawberry, cherry, lemon, plum, I mean not all are vegetables, but there's certainly a number of things you could have gone with ;p

Nope. You're the first one to question the name. When I do my own characters, my name is Matt, so I like to do M name that are similar to Matt. So I have made Oc's named Matt, Mark, Mako, and Matsuki.

It depends on the talent of the artist. I'll give you an example of 3. One is named Carotte. He was on a previous site and did requests and commissions that weren't highly priced. EVERYONE loved his stuff and wanted him to draw things. Well he got just about perfect with his art style, and diapers that he got swamped. So now his prices are a tad high, but you pay for perfection. He also takes time to make things right.

An artist named LilJ, or LilJoey did the same thing. Poor guy got swamped and with life issues like we all have, couldn't get out commissions in a quick time and got harassed like some artists do when paid things aren't done on time. His prices are higher than they were, but aren't too high to be considered ridiculous.

Then there's an artist named 34qucker who's doing a good job at keeping his stuff at a more affordable rate. He's doing good now, but still getting swamped.

The higher price you pay is for perfection and an artist's time. It seems like it sucks, but there's always good reasoning behind it.
