Ideally the saiyan would grow up, fight, become stronger and stronger, then report back to planet Vegeta, like a right of passage. Then the saiyan would return and go on other missions with fellow saiyans.
Kinda like going on a first hunt and bringing back an animal as a kill to show proof of doing the right of passage correctly or completing it etc. As a baby they are too wild to really conquer anything.
Let me give you a run down of the entire thing then.
The entire story of dragon ball is that there is an old man, who finds a spaceship that contained a human like child. The child was very destructive and eventually fell on his head, and that caused him to forget his heritage and instincts, and became basically moldable as any child is. He was raised happy, but the man died and left the boy to grow on his own. Goku is super strong, stronger than any human, even as a child, so he was able to care for himself.
One day he ran into a girl looking for dragon balls. Dragon balls, once all 7 are collected grant wishes. The girl, or Bulma, wants to wish for a boyfriend. Goku owns a dragon ball, which is why Bulma found him. Goku joins her and I forget why, I think it was because he wrecked her car or something. I think he wanted to wish for something too, but then they set off in search for the dragon balls. Then they slowly run into other characters and get caught up in all sorts of mayhem and helping others.
The history for Goku was that he was sent to earth to destroy it, as saiyan children are supposed to visit a planet, grow up, and conquer it.
The dragon balls were created by Namekians, who are green aliens with special powers. A Namekian named "Kami" watches over the earth to protect it. He created the dragon balls for earth.
Hmm...not that I can think of, other than this: An experiment gets taken on one of the trainers after being kidnapped. After being tested, one of the trainers starts to feel some weird side effects to being babied.
