Dark Ages (Private for me and Rye)

Jack followed Luke confidently, and climbed up onto the bar. While Luke looted, Jack was busy talking to the man. Jack worked his charm a bit, although it wasn't too tricky to befriend a drunk, so long as they weren't the belligerent type. Jack and the man were in the middle of laughing at a joke Jack had made (which honestly wasn't that funny, but the man found it hilarious), when Jack heard shouting outside. He turned to Luke, and crept over to a window. "There's a bunch of guys," he whispered. "I don't think they're coming this way - shit..."Jack mumbled, sliding the bar on the door shut and grabbing Lukes arm and pulling him away from the table towards the bar. A loud banging came from the door, following by shouting, and the unmistakable clinking armor. Lots of soldiers.
"Open this door. By order of the Holy Roman Emperor, we have contract to bring the heretics believed to be taking refuge in this town back to Rome. Let us enter to search the premises, or we'll be forced to treat all inside as heretic as well." A gruff voice shouted, followed by more impatient banging.

[Rye]

Luke looked over and had the banging "guards?" he said aloud and head the word heretic "shit , inquisitors." he said finding his stick , more of a staff really , had his crucifix bound around the staff and topped with a silver cross. He slung it over his back "At least we know where we are, although if they are looking or heresy they should start with the emperor , after all I don't think he can be all that holy if he's not Roman nor a empire." he said shrugging. Although he was making light of the situation he didn't like the inquisition "Let them in hopefully we're not on their list" he said wondering if there was a back door to the place. He could try pretending to be another solder and in the name of a different king , but that would only make them want to torch the place


(No one expects the Spanish inquisition!)

Jack shook his head. "No! What if there's heretics in here? They'll kill us too! Concealing and quartering heretics is considered heresy too you know. This dude could be Protestant for all we know!" Jack argued, pointing to the helpless drunk. "We should make a run for it... Out one of the back windows." Jack mumbled, looking around.
"I'm not going to ask again!" The voice shouted, pounding on the solid oaken door.

(I remember something about the inquisitors... :P Did they originally come after the Catholic Counter-Reformation, or am I thinking of the wrong dudes? Haha history blends together for me...)

(Anyone who ain't strictly catholic , burned or executed. So any kind of sin , they could target anyone. From Royalty to beggars and other priests. They did tend to pick on splinter groups of Christians though , but not orthodox.)

"I'd rather not get burned at the stake or tortured , maybe we could hide and see if they leave?" he asked "He might be , if they're after him let them take him." he said looking around "quick into the back before they break down the doors. We can see if we can hide, if not , run for it. " he said dashing through to the back , pressing his back to the wall to listen to what was going on. He made sure to be close to a window so he could leap out at a moment's notice.

As they reached the back, Jack scanned the room. there was a lone window, a bit higher up. The land was on an incline from the front of the Tavern, so what was ground level in the front matched the ground level throughout the first floor of the tavern. But in the back where they were, the ground level outside was very close to the ceiling here in the backroom. Jack looked up at the window... It would take a while to reach climb through, it was tiny. Jack saw boots walking by, and groaned. "There might be more of these guys around town than I thought..." Jack heard the door burst open in the front, splintering. Shouts rang out as boots slammed around on the stones of the ground floor. Jack stayed quiet, pressing against the wall next to Luke. "This is bad..." he breathed, looking around frantically. He saw a cabinet against the wall, and tugged on Luke's sleeve, pointing to it. If they started to come to the back, maybe they could squeeze in there... Or they had to try and make a break for it out the window. Or they could sit and pray they wouldn't be killed when found. But judging by the angry voices of the men from the other room, that didn't sound very likely...

[Rye]

Luke sighed , at least they would stand trial if they were caught. A test of faith , although really it would be an act of god if they lived. He looked around , he had to do something or they would easily be caught. If they could get out of here there should be no reason why they should get caught in town. Unless they did something bad last night. He looked to the cabinet and slipped over to it , slowly opening it and heading in , ushering Jack over to hide with him.

Jack followed Luke and crouched down, squeezing inside the cabinet and trying to hold it closed from the inside. They were now bathed in total darkness. Jack coughed, and covered his mouth. He couldn't move, and didn't want to try. He was crammed up against the side of the small cabinet, and his legs were entangled with Luke's. Jack squirmed, feeling something digging into his back. He mumbled something, trying to get whatever was digging into his back out.

[Rye]

Luke kept as quiet as he could "shut up , they'll hear us!" he hissed as he tried to listen and figure out where they were in the place. Hopefully they would leave soon. He tried to slowly get his legs out of Jacks , bringing them up close to his chest to be away from his and give his friend some space. He couldn't see a thing , he wondered what was taking up space in here although couldn't see what.

"Luke..." Jack hissed. "Your foot is... in the back of my head..." Jack said, suddenly realizing it didn't make sense. Jack felt something brush up against the back of his neck, and a suddenly a hand clamped down over his mouth tightly. Jack tried to scream, and it clamped down tighter. Jack was freaking out now, heart slamming as his arms scrabbled around behind him for something to grab. He was in full panic mode, and he could barely retrain himself from kicking his feet, so he didn't kick Luke.
"Quiet!" An angry voice hissed in Jack's ear, causing him to panic more. He hadn't realized when they had climbed in that the cabinet actually connected to the rest of the cabinets against the wall. There were no walls in between to separate them. He grabbed a half empty alcohol bottle in the complete darkness and tried to smash it behind him. however, he was overpowered and his wrist was grabbed, squeezed extremely tight. He squeezed his eyes shut in fear, expecting to be killed in any second.

"That's not my foot" he whispered back and head his friend getting attacked "what?!" he exclaimed , louder than he meant to and moved over to try and wrench the hand away from his friend's mouth , not wanting him to get hurt by whatever had him. He couldn't see at all an had no idea what was going on and wasn't about to strike out in case he hit Jack.
