(you'll have to find out yourself through playing with him)

Luke never liked having to be fed , meant whoever was feeding him couldn't eat their own. He opened his mouth and ate each spoonful as it was brought to him. His dignity in tatters he solomly ate his dinner , it was a good hearty meal , but he had gotten a fair share on both his bib and his face. Pretty heartbroken he stayed out of the conversation while he was eating.

"Hmm lake? Hmmm.Oh the stream running past the orchard. Not really mine dear , my land cuts off when the trees get a little thicker. We could only clear so much ,the rest we sort of left , since no one else has moved in on the other side I guess it's unowned. Id say don't go out any further , wouldn't want you two to get lost out there.

"We won't," Hayley promised, sweetly. "But I did think it might be nice to swim there, especially if it's hot tomorrow, like today."

Using Luke's bib, she carefully wiped his face for him, not recognising his discomfort. He was the one who had asked to be fed, after all. A moment of silence descended once again; no real conversation developing. Hayley had to recognise she didn't have the skills for subtlety under these circumstances.

"...And the, uh, scarecrows?" she asked. "I saw them all in the field, when I went to the toilet. And later, when we were walking, all along the side of the road. What are they, and why are there so many of them? They're a little... strange..."

She blushed, wondering if she'd said too much, but met her Grandmother's eye nevertheless, eager to hear her response. She'd almost finished eating, and so had Luke, so if there was any time to ask it would have to be now. Nervously, she took another big swallow of her water, and waited.

"That's fine, doesn't matter where you kids go , no one around for miles really , apart from the shops and the farm hands." she said "There's some other landmarks around but I'd doubt there's anything in them.

Luke frowned and tried to move away "hrmf" he said through the bib. The silence hung over them , so Luke tried to change that "It's monday today right , can we head into town one day this week?" he asked
"Hmm , I go into town three times a week or the farmers market , you can tag along if you catch me. I go Wednesday , Friday and Sunday. Although we can go to other areas around if you want. I know there isn't much here for you to do." she said "there's exploring and the radio , no T.V I'm afraid" she said as she finished her own meal and took her plate though. "Scarecrows? Yea , we have them to keep the crows away. there's a lof of feilds that need protecting , they're just bundles of hay. But really , sounds like you've been listening to the tales to school kids whisper about. The Scarecrows getting off the posts and walking at night. I mean really , what will these kids think of next" she chuckled with a hearty laugh.

Luke looked down , the scarecrows made him uneasy too. Not to the same extend as his two major fears , but enough to make him want to avoid them. There was just something , off , about them. Luke mopped his face up with the bib "you can head up and get a shower if you want , should work now and get changed" he suggested
"Desert will be served when you come back down dear" Grandma said from the other room checking on it while it was still cooking.

"Good idea," Hayley nodded, standing up, her own plate empty and her stomach full. "Except..." she realised, touching her belly lightly as she began to move, "I kinda need the toilet again, first." She glanced outside, via the nearest window, noting how dark it seemed to have become out there. Oh man, she didn't like the idea of going back out there one bit, especially with those things out there. She glanced pleadingly towards Luke, "Come with me??!" she appealed. Surely he must need to, by now. She couldn't remember him going all day, so far.

Not that, even with the security of company it was exactly an appealing concept. It was dark enough to shroud the menacing things completely, and out at the cornfield she could already picture how they would loom out of the darkness. Even that set her shuddering with anticipation and distress. But with probably almost twelve hours to go until dawn, there was no hope of ignoring it for that long; otherwise she'd almost have been tempted to simply try and hold it all in until morning. Not that there was any chance at all she could do that, with her nervous issues.

Maybe if she just made it quick. Just closed her eyes and tried not to think about it. But could she even find her way, like that?

Luke sighed "Well I guess you did feed me and I'd be going hungry if it wasn't for you" he said. He took one look outside and whimpered , not liking the dark. Dust from the sandy dirt road was blowing up. Strange , there was no wind when there were out earlier. He looked through the blurred vision of the field. There was a scarecrow just beside the outhouse. He jerked back a little , he couldn't be sure but he thought he could see the shadow of a wooden post there. He was about to try and focus to confirm his fearful suspicions when he was snapped out of his concentration "umm , y-yea , sure. I c-can go out w-with you" he said , not wanting to one bit. He was going to end up in drenched clothes if he headed out there.

Just as he was about to explain his situation to Grandma to avoid wet clothes. He sighed "o-okay , let's go" he said standing beside her by the door.

Hayley gratefully took her brother's hand, glad she wasn't going to have to go out into the twilight by herself. She wasn't sure she would have been able to face that, by the look of things out there. But then again, what choice did they have? How did people even cope without inside plumbing? She'd just have to hope this was enough to hold them both until morning. She didn't even want to think about what would be required if the need occurred once darkness had set in completely, and they were both in their nightclothes. Never mind Luke, she was worried she'd wet the bed if that happened.

Still, one thing at at time. The first thing was to get over this obstacle, which was intimidating enough. Opening the door, she pressed out into the cooling darkness, only remembering her shoes at the last minute, and hopping as she stepped into them clumsily, not wanting to let go of Luke's hand. The cornfield seemed a long way away, and she could barely see the shape of the outhouse, but the scarecrows were still all too obvious, standing out there.

"Are you okay?" she checked with Luke, hoping a display of confidence from him would give her courage. She squinted from the blowing dust. She just needed him to lead her there, sit her down and guard her while she went. Quite a big ask from her little brother, especially now his brash determination seemed to have been replaced with reluctance.

Luke stumbled a bit as he was dragged out. The porch light was out , casting the front of the house in a warm yellow glow. Moths fluttered around the bulb ,making a light ting as they hit against the old worn glass. The blond whimpered and wrapped his arms around Hayley "i-it's d-dark" he said , turning away , scared and wanting to go back. But he had agreed. Luke didn't let go ,far from it , the more he looked out the more agitated and twitchy he got , holding her tightly. He shook his head "n-no. I'm not. I-I'm s-s-scared" he whimpered , admitting his fear as he looked up at the night sky , not even the stars were out to help him. He did try his best to move towards where he remembered the outhouse, clutching his sister as he moved forward, taking small steps.

As it came into view he could see the post, wavering in the wind "w-w-wasn't t-there a scarecrow up there?" he asked , nodding up at it "Hayley....." he said looking around at the hazy darkness , straining his ears past the wind to try and hear something , anything. There was a snap, the sound of a broken corn plant. Luke looked towards the field, he could see some swaying abnormally , something was in there. It must be big enough to make the plants move with it's movement. As he watched whatever was in there stopped , or at least the plants stopped their erratic swaying , and then , a rushing , the stalks parted and thrashed back as whatever was in there was moving towards the pair.

Hayley froze for just a moment as whatever invisible horror began to unfold before her: the darkness itself seeming to lunge towards them with a cacophony of sound and sudden motion. Then, at the decisive moment, even as she felt her bowels twist convulsively inside her, the rest of her seemed spurred into essential action. Grabbing Luke's hand, she jerked him backwards, with only time to gasp one impulsive command.

"RUN!!!"

Then they were scrambling backwards in a tangle of arms and legs, falling over each other, barely able to coordinate their movements, and with only the vaguest impression of where the safety of the doorway lay. She had no idea what was going on, only that her worst nightmares and most irrational imaginings seemed to lie out here, and have been given shuddering animated life. Her eyes stared wild into the darkness, but still she couldn't make anything out which made any kind of sense; only what she had perceived had been enough to trigger her most primal of emergency response, and now she was sobbing and jerking her way backwards, hoping against hope that the doorway lay within immediate reach.

Who knew how many moments they had left, before whatever it was reached them?

The thing was coming through, just a few more seconds and Luke would see it. He was pulled back just as he was about to see it. He screamed. He ran back towards the light sobbing and crying all the way there. Not much time had passed since they left but they created enough noise to get Grandam to come out
"What's with all the screaming?" he asked looking at the two of them. Luke was sobbing and rubbing his eye , his trousers soaked with a large wet patch , the thing in the field was scary enough let alone being out in the dark without even a torch. Grandma just sighed "we'd better get you cleaned up then" she said to Luke helping him get up. She looked to Hayley to see what state she was in and what course of action to take.

"What is that? What's out there?!" Hayley gasped, scared beyond shyness. "There was... I'm not..." The scarecrows: she was sure it was something to do with that, though she hadn't seen clearly enough to be certain.

She glanced over to Luke for confirmation and reassurance, and saw the state he was in. Apparently he had needed the toilet, after all, but not any more. She didn't blame him though, in the slightest. She realised she'd almost pooed in her pants herself, and only her sudden surge of action had got in the way. Surely that was all that had saved them at all, never mind matters of dignity. She knew the fear and emotion was still spread across her face just as dramatically as it was across Luke's, her breath coming in short sharp starts, and a cold sheen of sweat across her body. Within her, her insides still shuddered and strained urgently, along with the rest of her body, reminding her she wasn't free in that respect, either; though that was the least of her concerns right now. She knew, for sure, that there was no way she was going back out there. She stared anxiously at the door, fearing now that mere wood, warmth and light would not be anywhere enough to stand in its way.

"Did you see it?" she appealed urgently to Luke, slowly backing away from the door, then, just as quickly to her grandmother, almost in the same breath, her mind racing, "Do you have a gun?!"
