Luke hadn't seen anything more , having be spun around before the crucial moment of seeing what it was. Luke continued to sniffle and cry, Grandma hauled him up "come on , let's get you washed and dressed for bed." he said helping him up to the bathroom so he could wash himself. Grandma left him to it and came back down stairs to see what state Hayley was in "A gun? Yessssss , but I hardly see why that's relevant. Weren't you just goin' to the outhouse? You get scared at something? Maybe a mouse. Either way that's no reason to shoot the thing. Just a bit of a jump I think" she said dismissing the girl's fear "this is your first time out here, I'm sure there are lots of things that seem scary or surprise you , but they're harmless and you're just not used to being around them" she said , putting a hand on her back. She was trying to reassure her , although her face was one of concern , but it was quickly replaced by one of a smile to comfort her and calm her down.

Hayley shook her head, insistent.

"No!" she pleaded with her grandmother, calm enough now at least to enunciate herself more clearly and try to make the woman understand. "It was something big. Really big! And it came for us... right towards us! Fast... and angry. It wasn't any normal creature: cat or dog."

A bear, maybe, her rational mind flittered? But that was ridiculous. Even standing on its hind legs, a bear wouldn't move like that...

"Honestly..." she tried again. "Whatever it was, it was big, and it was trying to hurt us. Please... if it comes in here... you need to get that gun... and... and..." Still pale and sweating, she gesticulated towards the doorway.

Hayley hoped it was a big one; like, one of those double barreled shotguns. Though, would bullets even stop whatever it was? If it was one of those scarecrow things... But that was even more ridiculous than a bear...

Gradually, she was slowing down and starting to listen to herself; realising how all this must sound. Beginning now, all of a sudden, to even doubt what she herself had just experienced. Had her mind really been playing some kind of tricks on her? And with that, the shyness came back, shutting her flow of words down like a trap around her jaw. She glanced up at her Grandmother's condescending face for the first time, and quickly looked away, feeling like a silly scared little girl, who needed the toilet and was afraid of the boogeyman in the dark.

"Please," she whispered, shrinking. "Don't make me go back out there..."

Grandma sighed "calm down. Now I'm going to get your brother sorted since he seems to be in a even worse state. It was probably just your imagination and some small night time animal in the field. Nothing dangerous" she assured her "I'm not going to make you go back out there if you don;t want to , or at all. It's entirely up to you. It's just the darkness and the unfamiliar environment , you're just thinking things up to try and explain something very simple" she stated heading up the stairs towards the bathroom.

A bit later Luke was marched down the stairs in his pyjamas, he was clinging to Grandma , still sniffling and red around the eyes. He had been crying a lot. His pyjamas were a plain white shirt and soft cotton trousers. She sat him down on the couch and sighed "yo should have told me you were scared of the dark Luke. Explains the wet trousers. Lucky for you you're not the first one to end up soggy on the farm. We've had other kids , farm hands and others needing them fr a whole host of reasons so we have a plentiful stock so you can keep the bed dry tonight." she said , going to the closet and returning with something for him.

By the time Luke and her grandmother reappeared, Hayley was feeling a lot calmer. She'd been hesitating right there beside the doorway the whole time, but having not heard a sound or hint of movement from beyond was increasingly convincing herself her grandmother might have been right, and it might somehow have been nothing after all. If only it hadn't seemed so real and so vivid. But then, it wasn't the first time her mind had seemed to be playing tricks with her so far today. Perhaps she was just tired, or travel-lagged, and it was having some kind of weird effects on her.

Nevertheless, she was still damn sure she wasn't going back out there again tonight. Her grandmother had promised her she wouldn't have to. Except... there was still one small problem.

"I'm sorry grandma," she whimpered, as the old lady was going to the closet, not paying too much attention to what was going on with Luke as long as she was still wrapped up in her own concerns. "But, I still need the toilet..."

Perhaps the old lady could escort her out there; something seemed to suggest that, unlike Luke, her very presence would banish any terror which might lurk out there. And if not; well, at least she'd have to believe Hayley then. If they both survived a second encounter, of course. But Hayley was too shy to ask as much of her, directly.

Grandma went back to Luke "it's okay , just breath and try to remain calm. I'll get to you after dealing with your brother." sh said , in her hand was a nearly folded diaper , a cloth one by the looks of it. It looked handmade , being in a light blue shade with faded baby prints in white , all in all it looked very soft and babyish. The woman spared no time in yanking the boy's pyjama pants down and slipping the diaper up between his legs , getting it fastened on tightly before pulling them back on. "There , now you'll be dry all through the night" she said , picking him up and hugging him and rocking him gently.

"Well there's no alternative I'm afraid. It's out there. You're just going to need to believe there's nothing out there" she said "Luke's not going back out seeing the state he was in when you fell back in here" she said "I would come out , but I think I'd better stay with him for a bit"

Luke whimpered , blushing when changed but couldn't put up any resistance. Half leaping in her arms he hugged her tightly , still listening in though "Sorry Hayley" he said , not daring to turn and look, he didn't like getting the blame for this and holding her up with his needs.

Hayley gawped, reduced back to muteness at the way her grandmother had treated her brother. Not that the idea of a nighttime diaper seemed inappropriate, given his particular needs, but also the way she was now cradling and rocking him; just because he'd got upset and had an accident. Not that he seemed to mind. Part of her was almost jealous that she was making so much fuss of him, when Hayley had been just as scared and upset. Yet, at the same time, what if she had done an accident in her own pants? Would the same thing be happening to her, right now?

Mutely, she looked back towards the door; feeling the expectation and her responsibility as big sister, as well as an increasing sense that somehow it had all been an imagining. Slowly and reluctantly, she shuffled back towards it, and after a few long moments of gathering herself, opened it a crack and stared out into the dark.

Of course, it all looked peaceful out there, apart from the eddies of dust and sighing wind. Darker, though, if anything, even than it had been before, making it possible to imagine anything out there. The corn field seemed an impossibly long distance away, not to mention that being the source of their terrors. There was no way she was going to be able to make it all the way over there. But putting her foot back outside the door seemed possible, then slowly, the rest of her. Despite her growing sense of horror, she was almost curious. What had been out there? If she saw it, at least she'd know. Leaving the door ajar, and praying her grandmother wouldn't close it behind her, she began to edge along the side of the house, moving from one pool of window light to the next, eyes staring out into the blackness and feeling an existential sense of dread. Where was she even going? Not all the way across the open space to the little shack: of that she was certain. It would almost be liberating to be scared once again; this time she'd just let herself use her pants and be done with it. Or alternatively, as soon as she was certain nothing was about to come lunging out of the darkness, and once she had edged along far enough from the door, there was the temptation that maybe she could just squat down right here in the flowerbed... Dirty, yes, but no worse than a cat might do, at the end of the day...

Grandma cradled Luke until he settled down "you feeling better Luke?" she asked , getting a nod she put him down and let him toddle away back to the living room. He was still in shock , his mind not reacting to what was going on around him. He sat on the couch away from the windows and hugged one of the pillows, letting things process for now. Grandma went to the door and opened it to see where Hayley was , knowing she might need some help , although she didn't think she was scared she might not risk having her soil a set of trousers like Luke did , if she could help it she would like to keep the laundry count down. "Just out there, I'll stand here if you want. It's unlikely to be wolves this time of year but I'll be here just in case" she said warmly.

The wind died a bit , the bodies of scarecrows coming into focus. They wee still there , their limbs still twitching in rhythm to the light wind. The place was silent again , nothing moved , whatever had been there had either stopped moving or was gone, although it made her look completely mad now there was nothing, Luke at least had the excuse he was scared of the dark to hide behind , and would likely be his defence when his wits came back and realised he was all padded up and wasn't likely to be let out of them at night now, wither he was having a bad night or good one.

Hayley actually felt a little better once she realised she actually could still see the scarecrows. Not brave enough to actually approach them, but at least she knew where they were, and they weren't moving, which meant she didn't seem to be in imminent danger in quite the same way. Plus, it set her back to questioning her sanity. She'd read something somewhere about mass delusions and hallucinations. Surely that was a much more logical explanation for what she and Luke had just experienced than some terrifying supernatural entity. She'd already recognised her brain wasn't firing on all cylinders; probably she just needed some sleep.

She still wasn't going over there though. Feeling absolutely ridiculous and shameful, she prepared to put her earlier plan into action. Hurriedly pulling down her underpants and trousers in one bashful movement, she squat down quickly over a discrete rear patch of the flowerbed. It felt utterly surreal, especially in the cold air, and staring out into the eerie darkness with her behind exposed to the ground, but she forced herself to go ahead. By the time her grandmother came along, she was already too far ahead with the process, and was caught in mortified tableau, scatting like a cat onto the earth.

"I'm... I'm... sorry..." she managed, before humiliation shut her down completely like a clamp around her jaw, unable to move now until the act was finished beneath her, but her face lighting up like a glowing lamp and a thick choking mortification closing off her throat. She almost wished whatever it was had got her, now... If there was ever a time for the ground to come along and just swallow her up...

Grandma just rolled her eyes "Well come back inside and get dressed for bed. I think you both must be tired to be seeing things in the dark" she said , holding the door open for her. "You go and get changed and there will be some dessert waiting down here for you" he said as she stepped in and walked away to serve p the cake and icecream.

Luke lifted himself up and toddled over to Hayley , his eye red from the tears and his cheeks flushed a little, but he seemed calm on the outside at least. He went over to her and held her hand and leaned on her "C-can you help me g-get my teddy?" he asked weakly , not feeling all that steady on his own feet. He tried not to look outside , still fragile but feeling better so far, normally he would be dipered up in bed nice and early with a warm bottle of milk if his parents knew he was going to have a bad night.

Mutely, Hayley finally managed to restore herself, and silently followed her grandmother inside, head down and cheeks flaming. What the hell was wrong with her? How could she have ended up like this? Still, there was nothing for it now but to do as she was told, and move like a zombie, entirely under another's command, while her mind boiled inside her in self-effacing turmoil.

She rested her hand gently on Luke's head when he tottered over to her, but her thoughts were still somewhere else, and her embarrassment throbbing like a literal pain in her gut. She nodded though at his request and gestured for him to follow her upstairs.

"Come with me then," she said mechanically, her voice seeming to grate dryly in her throat. Taking his hand, she led him up the stairs. Only when they were all the way up, well removed from their grandmother, and she had retrieved the bear from the bed to present to Luke's hands did she start to seem even remotely like herself. Then she started silently to cry, cuffing the tears away as if she were angry with them.

"I did it in the flowerbed," she told Luke bluntly; the one person she could be open with about such a humiliation. "And Grandma came and saw. There weren't any monsters."

Taking a slow shuddering breath, Hayley gathered herself. It was bad; sure. But now she had to move forward. Frankly, she was surprised her grandmother hadn't seen fit to diaper her the way she had Luke, after that. Probably she should think herself lucky that the old lady had brushed it off so easily. For now, at least.

"I'm going to have that shower," she told Luke plainly, following on from that admission, "and get into my night-things." She got a nightdress from her suitcase and turned towards the toilet-less bathroom. "You can come in if you want," she allowed Luke, "or just go back down to Grandma."
