"Which one?" asked Rei. "The 1937 one with Frederic March and Janet Gaynor? The 1954 one with James Mason and Judy Garland? Or the 1976 one with Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand?"

(My favorite is the 1937 one, even though most people only talk about the 1954 one. The 1976 one blows, though.)

(Kristofferson is the best part of '76, undoubtedly, and he deserved his Golden Globe)

"I'm thinking '54 at this moment, because it's the one people are most familiar with."

"Sounds good to me," Asuka remarked, "I'd never turn down a Judy Garland film."

"Not to mention, the one Oscar the Academy agrees it fucked up in not delivering and would do again if it had the chance."

"At least they gave Best Picture to the right film that year," Gendo remarked, "On The Waterfront is one of the best movies ever, if you ask me."

They looked on and watched. "I think the main reason the '76 version pales is because while it has talented people and Kristofferson's amazing performance, Barbra Streisand can't play ingenue believably, and you definitely sense that the deck is stacked in her favor."

"That makes sense," Shinji commented, "Still, give the '76 version some credit. Kristofferson and Streisand were both established more as singers than actors. So, at least the filmmakers tried to adapt the premise to better suit their talents."

"That's true. And the songs are good, even if Evergreen has been played to death and it suits a very indulgent ending."

Soon, they all sat down and watched the 1954 version of the classic "A Star is Born."

Of course one thing that did nag at them was how the "restoration" was audio only over still frames of the excised footage that likely had never been salvaged.
