The Idols' Final Shot (w/ Shirayuki)
Tanaka Tomoko stood before the head of her talent agency, and its board of directors, bowing profusely at the end of the oval table surrounded by suits all staring her down. All of them pointing to a graph depicting the company's net loss from the performance today, as well as citing previous performances that also did not meet Tomoko's projections. Some were even going as far as to yell at her.
Tomoko let out a nervous cough before starting, "Now, yes I know the performance from today did not rake in an ideal amount of money as I had thought-"
"You weren't even close! You were off by four entire digits!"
Tomoko winced at that but continued anyway, "But ladies and gentlemen, I have an idea that would make your investments practically march back into your pockets," Tomoko said.
"Ms. Tanaka, you said that about the last several gimmicks you have presented," one of the shareholders said.
"I assure you, this idea will be different, introducing- Idol Mimes!" Tomoko pulled out a stack of papers from her bag and handed them out- posters depicting the girls of the group she managed in mine-themed dresses and skirts. "Cute and memorable attire, the originality of the concept, and the-" Tomoko stopped her pitch when the head of the talent agency raised his hand.
"I'll stop you right there. Lead me through this. A mime?" he said, to which Tomoko nodded, "You mean the clowns that don't talk," to which Tomoko nodded again. "Okay. How are they going to sing?"
Tomoko's face flushed in realization before she made another round around the table, collecting the posters and timidly tucked the stack beneath her arm. Tomoko's confidence in her voice was gone, only able to let out a meek request, "I- if you could spare the money for sign language classes, the girls can surely-"
"A song entirely in sign language!? How are we going to sell that!? It'd just be the instrumentals!!" another suit said.
"Listen, Tanaka," the head of the agency started, "I've given you so many chances. So, so, so many. The BOD here says I should fire you before you burn away even more of our cash. They tell me, 'how can a failed idol possibly run an idol group, much less a successful one!'"
Tomoko could only look down at her hands and nod along in shame.
"But, I'm a magnanimous man. So I'll give you ONE more chance-"
"Two more chances?" Tomoko asked hopefully.
"ONE!!!" the head of the agency held up his finger, "One more chance, to set things right. I expect results in at most, a week. And if you blow it, then you, and those five girls of yours, are getting the boot. Is that understood?"
Tomoko silently looked down at her feet, her lips quivering and shoulders shaking. The gravity of her situation weighed heavily upon her more than ever before.
"Is that understood!!" the head of the agency repeated, louder this time.
"Understood, sir!" Tomoko said with a nod, not looking up to look her superior in the eyes.
"Good, you are now dismissed."
Tomoko gathered her things, bowed to her superiors, and turned around, heading out the door. The moment she closed the door, she could hear an eruption of muffled arguments from the other side. She sighed dejectedly, lightly scratching the corner of her eye before looking up and to her side. She hadn't realized that the girls of her idol group were sitting just outside the meeting room, all already changed back into their casual attire. Immediately seeing that the girls were there, she quickly straightened up, took a deep breath through the nose, and put on a smile. "Well then girls, let's get back to our office," she said, motioning for them to follow her to the elevator. "I know today was a bit of a bust, but that just means we have to try again even harder next time!"
She waited for the elevator to open and then stepped in, pressing the button to her floor and closing the door once everyone got in. She put on her usual enthusiastic, professional attitude for the girls, but on the inside things could not be looking more bleak for her. The elevator stopped at their floor and she led the girls to their office. Tomoko retreated into her office to ruminate on the day's events, leaving the girls in the common room. She needs to think of a new gimmick. FAST!

You know, this wasn’t exactly the life she had in mind.
Everyone wants to hit it big in the world, and try so hard to reach for the stars… being an idol sounds like a wonderful career for any aspiring girl out there! You get to look cute, sing, dance, have lots of fans and most importantly, have lots of money. Yet of course, fate quickly threw a wrench into the gears as the 5 young idols resided in the small commons area assigned to them by the agency.
I mean, being ferried around on the public bus didn’t exactly do wonders for their image or situation. It’s not like they were any bad either - aside from a few issues on stage, they performed rather admirably (well, at least Neneka thought so), yet in the ever saturated market, a small group of idols didn’t exactly do well to get the eyes of the audience.
It’s been roughly 2 hours since their last gig now, and given the less-than-happy sounds of the directors and the higher ups, it definitely didn’t go all too well. Aside from the record-low attendance (Which was roughly less than 30 people), the lights failing for a bit probably screwed over what minor amount of fans they had.
Yuriko sighed as she lazed against the couch, a can of half drunken beer in her hands “Sometimes I wonder why I went into this in the first place.” She muttered to herself, shaking her head. As one of those who didn’t go into the industry all too grilling, she was probably the first one to criticize anything that happened.
“W-Well, look on the bright side!” A short, pink haired girl tried to reassure the rather gloomy atmosphere as she pranced up and down nervously in the room “We’ll… uh, just need to try harder. I’m sure Ms Tanaka has a plan for this!” She chirped, though clearly wasn’t too confident in her voice.
“Neneka, you know that we’re probably toast after this?” She sighed as she took another sip of her beer. As someone that is supposed to play the cutesy perfect idol on the stage, the group looked quite far from that right now - though considering everything that has happened… it wasn’t all too surprising.

"Toast?! What do you mean?!" the short girl with suntanned skin cried out, "Those guys up there can't actually expect us to draw a crowd of hundreds of people!" Mana grabbed the sides of her neck-length hair in panic.
The tall girl with her black hair tied in a low ponytail sighed and closed the book she was reading. "Don't be ridiculous, they certainly don't expect a feat like that out of us," she said, to which Mana sighed in relief. "They more-so expect us to draw in a crowd of thousands, if not more."
That made Mana's eyes widen even more, "But that's impossible!!!" she bemoaned. Fukada Mana, being a girl from the countryside, was never able to fathom how so many people can be in one place. She recalled how her eyes nearly bulged out of her sockets when Ms. Tanaka showed her a video of another idol group's performance and told her that every pink glowstick in the dark was being held by a person.
Tseng Li-Hua brushed her bangs aside and buried her nose back in her book to distract herself. She maintained a calm expression, but she still tugged on her high-neck in nervousness.
Tomoko wasn't faring well in the other room, shakily writing down ideas on her whiteboard, and thoroughly thinking them through before erasing them. And whenever she did come up with something that could work, she searched it up to see if that gimmick was already taken- which they were. "Come on... something to stand out... something to stand out..." she muttered to herself.
She looked around her office. It was a complete mess, littered with envelopes from banks, loan companies, and whatever other people she owes money to. She looked to the stack of mime-idol posters and sighed, picking them up and placing them in the shredder. As the shredder whirred, she peeked out her window into the room with the girls lounging about. She looked to her desk again, picking up a picture frame. It was a framed photo of the group at a restaurant after their first performance. They didn't get a good crowd, but they had all performed great, which was certainly something to celebrate. She sighed, thinking to herself that she had completely failed those girls. She supposed that once the higher-ups boot them out, she should first help them with any financial issues or finding somewhere else to work before helping herself. She would sacrifice a limb for these girls, it was her duty after all, to take care of them after taking them in. Tomoko chuckled lightly, in that sense, these girls are almost like her babies.
"Like my... babies..." she muttered to herself after thinking it. Then Tomoko slowly looked up, her eyes widening by the second, an errant idea striking her head.

“Impossible?” Yuriko found the girl’s reaction rather amusing, really “Mana, have you seen the idol groups we’re competing against? ‘STELLARIA’ was close to breaking the ten thousand visitor count a few weeks ago!” She sighed, referring to a different idol group that was…for the lack of a better word, in a much better place than them right now.
Hwa was more or less down in the dumps right now as she was more or less curled up on the edge of the couch, muttering something to herself about her parents and how she was going to be a miserable failure to them. Neneka had tried to approach her earlier but was quickly turned away with the shake of the head. Speaking of which…
“Well, w-why don’t we try thinking of a new way to stand out against the crowd?” Neneka chirped, “That’s what… Ms Tomoko is doing, right…?”
“…You know, sometimes I can’t help but think that she might’ve be the reason why we’re fucked like this.” Yuriko muttered before turning back to the can of beer.

"Aww, don't say that. I think she tries her best," Mana said, although she didn't exactly disagree with Yuriko's notion.
"Well, if your 'best' is not enough then perhaps you should consider a career change," Li-Hua said. She has her respect and appreciation for Ms. Tomoko where they are due, but she often questioned her capabilities. She supposed she should take up Neneka's offer to test if her criticism is well founded.
"Well, you never know, we might have been boned anyways, with or without her," Mana said, not exactly bringing up the mood with that.
"Hm... historical figures," Li-Hua proposed, the history major in her starting to speak, "For example, Neneka can be Napoleon." Li-Hua pondered the idea for a while before saying, "Wow, this is hard after all."
Meanwhile, Tomoko was thinking the idea through. She thought of costumes, and realized that she could cut down on costs and just use the regular idol-costumes from the first performance. It was just the 'pants' that needed a rework. Would it be cute? She peeked through the window and looked at the group. She chuckled to herself, they're always cute. She then scrambled to her computer and did some research before she got too into this idea. She then exhaled in relief. The idea isn't taken! There wasn't a group doing anything remotely similar! She may have found it! She found the new gimmick! Tomoko began typing rapidly on her computer, doing even more research and making more arrangments.

"...I guess that's true. I've may have been rather... mean, I'm sorry." Yuriko slowly said a small apology as she looked around the common room "It's just that, well, things haven't exactly been going great. Really, I'm barely earning enough to keep myself out of bankruptcy, let alone pay for my tuition fees!" She sighed. She reckoned that most people here was in the same position anyways.
"Um... Napoleon? It's... I think it needs a bit more work." Neneka shook her head as she tried to come up with something to stand out to the crowd. Besides, historical figures!? Sure it's unique, but she doubted that's what people came here to look for "What about something like... stuffed animals! Wait, nevermind..." She muttered, before shaking her head "Ms Tomoka really has... a difficult job."

"Hwa, do you have any ideas?" Mana asked, trying to get Hwa out of her mopey slump. "How about like, superheroes? And we fight monsters while singing?"
"Already taken," Li-Hua said.
Tomoko suddenly burst out her room with her bag. "Hey girls, I need to go get some shopping done, I will be right back!" she said, sounding much more cheery than earlier. She went over to the sofa and stuck her hand between the cushions, "Scooch over, Li-Hua," she said, to which she did. She let out a gasp when she felt something and pulled her hand out of the sofa. "Oh, thank goodness!" she said as she pocketed the 5000 yen note and the spare change she found in there. "You girls sit tight!" she said as she left the office.
Li-Hua glanced at the door as she left. "How... how bad is her financial situation?" she asked.

"I'll... I'll just follow whatever you guys choose..." Hwa muttered as she shook her head, though she turned her head up as she suddenly noticed Tomoko's excitement - at least that seemed to intrigue her curiosity a little. Judging by their manager's excitement, it seems like Ms Tomoko had gotten a new brainwave this time... whether it was good or not, only time would tell.
"Ah, Ms Tomoko!" Similarly, her enthusiasm was able to rouse Neneko's spirit as well as her face lightened at her appearance. "What's the-" She was just about to ask about the new idea that their manager seemingly had... before quickly being left in the dust as she darted out of the commons room at lightspeed, though that didn't stop her. "Come on guys, I think Ms Tomoko has a plan for us!" She said, trying to cheer up everyone else.
"I... uh, probably not much better than ours, to be honest." Yuriko observed, "Why is that money even there!?"

"Probably fell out of her pockets," Mana asked.
"Or ours," Li-Hua said, her face buried back in her book. "Her ideas haven't exactly worked so far," Li-Hua said to Neneka, as the idea of Ms. Tomoko having an idea is not one that inspires hope. "We can keep brainstorming and possibly come up with something better," she said.
Ms. Tomoko was already at the station, looking on her phone for the location of the shop she was searching for as she boarded a train.

"Well, yeah, but I have trust in her this time, I feel it!" Neneka pouted, "Besides, wasn't she a idol before she became our manager? I'm sure it'll work out..." Her voice trailed off... really, even for a optimist like herself, there was still a twinge of doubt in her voice "But... I guess we could brainstorm something up alongside it."
"I do wonder what her idea is, though..." Yuriko observed "Maybe we should try a different angle of approach - instead of thinking up a new gimmick for the team as a whole, what about just the performances itself?"
