Well basically a transgender person's sex doesn't match their gender (Sex of the brain, to make it easier to understand). There have been many theories on the cause, however the cause has gone under much research in the past 3 or 4 years and it's very likely that it's biological. Proof has been shown through these researches that transgender indeviduals in fact where born with a brain of the opposite sex. Caused by hormone levels during development, by either the mother and/or fetus.
Many transgender are very likely to seek treatment. There are no methods of fixing the brain, so you can only change the body. Which is known as Transition. Many will seek to try and look as they feel, by going through years of therapy and surguries and taking medication (HRT, Hormone Replacement Therapy). A very scary process non the less, you really have to be ready to throw away everything and start from scratch. Expecially if you go through with the last surgery which can't be reversed (SRS, Sexual Reasignment Surgery).
Those who choose not to go through this process... , do so later on in the future or try to live with it as best as they can. Many are not able to live with it though and commit suicide. I believe the most recent statistics on that is 35% actually commit suicide and 50% have tried by age 20.
Being transgender is a hard life, but it does give you an insane knowledge about both sexes since we end up having lived both.
Anyway ... there is more to it then that .. which can be looked up. Just keep in mind there are many biased oppinions out there.
